What could Tate be a nickname for?

I like it, but my husband thinks its too informal/not namish enough to be a given first name.

Thomas?
Nathan/Nathaniel?

First middle combos that could make this work appreciated, too. (for instance, James Kenneth = Jake, Catherine Cory = Cora, etc).

I've only known it as a female nickname, for Tatum.

I've seen it as a nickname for Thatcher. I prefer Nathaniel, but it definitely works.

I've never seen nicknames from first/middle combos before- I love Jake from James Kenneth.

The only people I know that go by Tate are named Tate, so I don't really know what else it could be short for. I think that it'd sound kind of stupid being short for Nathan or Nathaniel, when there's already Nate.

I don't see why Tate isn't namey enough to be a name? Lots of surnames are used as first names, especially for boys.
