well thats why i said "imo". if i saw your name printed and then met you, (and presumably didnt know any better) i would call you mee-gin until you corrected me.
I've met Megans that are "mee-gin" and "meg-an", but mostly mee-gin. But Meagan and Meaghan look like they should be "mee-gin" because they have that long "mea" spelling Meghan looks more like "Meg-in" Maegan/Maeghan/Magen - the letter a comes first so it really looks like May-gin.
All that being said, I there are probably people with every spelling with every pronunciation. That's the only thing I don't like about the name - how hard it is to guess which pronunciation it is from the spelling.
I'm a Megan and I've been called Mee-gin all of twice. I've never actually met anyone who went by mee-gin, and I've only ever heard of one other person who went by that (I think she spelled it the same way as me). Maybe it's more common in other places, but mee-gin doesn't even seem like a real pronunciation to me.
I never thought about that. All the Megans I've met pronounced it meg-in with a flat E sound. The one girl who pronounced it mee-gin actually spelled it that way, Meegan, so it never crossed my mind. Good point though, thanks!
As one of the tons of Megan's out there, I gotta say I'm not a fan of the name. That's actually what made me interested in names to begin with: from the time I met another Megan at age 6 or so and had to become "Megan M." I started hating my name and wanted desperately to have another one. Now I'm used to it, but I will definitely be naming my children something less popular. I also constantly had/have to spell out my name. I've had it misspelled on important documents, invitations, checks, etc. There are just too many variations.
Oh, and I did a poll about this awhile ago, so that might help you. Here's the link: http://community.livejournal.com/baby_names/288334.html
Thank you. Megan is a name I've loved ever since I was maybe 5 or 6; I don't know what it is about it, but something about the sound just had me smitten. I hate that it's so incredibly popular, and doesn't really match the names I have in mind (Audrey, Kate, Anna, Grace), but I can't help but be madly in love with. So for what it's worth, I think you have a lovely name. :-)
Hehe, thank you :) I loooove Audrey and Grace, by the way. Audrey is one of my closest friend's names and since knowing her I've totally fallen in love with that name. I knew several Graces growing up and, even though one was snotty, I always thought that name was beautiful. I don't like nor hate Kate, and I do really like Anna but I just know too many little girls with that name.
I honestly think Megan would be more popular than "Jessica" or "Jennifer" on the list of names from the 80s if the list actually combined spellings. Probably Caitlin and its variations would outrank it also.
This is strange, because in NZ NOBODY pronounces it Meg-in, everybody pronounces it mee-gan. Maybe it's different in other countries, because I've never anybody who pronounces it Meg-in, no matter how they spell it.
