1. Briony - First of all how do you pronounce it? Is it Br-eye-oh-knee or Brie-oh-knee? And secondly do you like it?

2. Bellatrix - Was this name invented by J.K Rowling for Harry Potter or was it a legit name before that? And do you like it?

1- Br-EYE-oh-nee. But I prefer it spelled Bryony. I don't mind it!
2- Bellatrix comes from Latin and means "female warrior". It's would be pronounced Bell-AH-tree-ks. Idk how it's prn in HP, sorry. It's also the name of a star in the constellation of Orion.

I forgot, I prefer Beatrix, which is more similar to the eye than to the ear, but Bellatrix sounds made up to me (even though it isn't). Also, I'm not quite keen on the meaning. Not so much the "warrior" part, but "bellum" means "war" in latin, which makes it closer to "soldier" than "knight", so it's a little less poetic in my eyes, if that makes sense.

1. I would pronounce it BRI-oh-nee (rhymes with irony). Never heard or read this name before now. I don't hate it... I think it would grow on me.

2. Not invented by JK. All of Sirius' family members are named after stars. I don't like it. Not even talking about the harry potter connection, and that probably being the most evil character in the series after Voldemort, the name sounds (in my opinion), like a domanatrix. Every time I see that name, I automatically think of a woman with long black hair dressed in a black and red patent leather corset holding a riding crop...

Isabella (nn bella) or Beatrix are 2 similar names that don't have the same connotation.

I say it how everybody in Atonement seems to have said it, which I'm fairly sure is the first pronunciation. They say br-eye, not brie.

I actually like both of the names, but mainly because of the connections. I thought that Saoirse [which is on my favourites list] Ronan's performance as Briony was amazing, and I love the character of Bellatrix. I probably wouldn't ever use them, just because I don't like them that much.

I don't like Briony. I do love Bellatrix...she's my favorite death eater in the series. I named one of my aoens in FFX "Belatrix" [two Ls wouldn't fit]. However, I don't think I'd name my child that. Along with not wanting any nn of "Trixie," I just don't think it's fit for somebody who doesn't have some sort of magical power or something. Haha.

I pronounce Briony like Br-eye-oh-nee. It's also a flower (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Briony). But maybe that's where you got the name from?

I don't like Bellatrix. I don't mind the HP connection, it just sounds too princessy (not a word, I'm aware of that) even though she was an evil character.

Br-eye-oh-nee, but it ends up sounding like breye-uhnee

& I will always associate that name with HP. It's ok.

1. Bry-oh-nee. Just like it's spelled? Like Brian with a y on the end, basically.

2. I like it, but I wouldn't use it because the character scares the crap out of me (Helena Bonham Carter gives me nightmares, sadly), and it definitely wouldn't have hit my radar if not for HP, so... yeah, it's not on my list nor will it be.

1. I've met a Briony, and she pronounced it BRY-oh-knee. I like the way it looks written down, but it kind of slurs together and sounds an awful lot like "briny" spoken out loud.

2. I've never heard of a human named Bellatrix outside of HP, but it's been the name of a star for thousands of years. I don't like it; I'd prefer Isabella or Bella or Beatrix.

1. I used to pronounce it BREE-oh-knee, but I prefer BRI-oh-knee now. Sounds more refined.

2. Haven't read HP, so I wouldn't know, but I don't like it. I'm going to go with a few other people and say I much prefer Beatrix.

Hmmmm... I've always pronounced this name Like BREE-oh-nee. But I'm not sure I've ever heard anyone else say it. Didn't realize most people say BRY rather than BREE.

Sorry, I don't like Bellatrix either and wouldn't even if she wasn't a Harry Potter character. What about Bellatrice? I'm not sure I like it alot better but I think it's prettier and I prefer Beatrice over Beatrix.

I laughed at #2.

Also, a former coworker was friends with a Bellatrix who went by Trixie and was a female body builder. "You'd have to have a name like Trixie in that profession," was the rationale.
