My favorite name for a girl is Amanda, which I know a lot of you think is not so cool these days due to the whole 80's-90's trend. (it was never popular in my country, btw)
Anyway, I was just thinking about nicknames. I don't really like nicknames, and if I have a daughter she'll always be Amanda to me, but it's still interesting to see what you guys think.

Other than the obvious Mandy and Manda, which nicknames would work? Would Amy work?

Amy definitely works. My best friend's name is Amanda and someone used to call her Ama, pronounced Ah Mah

I really like the name Amanda - actually, I like a lot of the names that are supposedly of the 80's-90's trend. I don't know about nicknames. I don't like Mandy at all, so I'd go with Manda, or like you, just call her Amanda.

I guess Amy could work, but I'd wonder if people wouldn't 'get it' because it's not an obvious nn like Mandy and Manda are.

my cousin gets called amandy, but thats a bit of a joke as she hates it.
i've also heard Ammy, Amma and Emmy for Amandas.

I don't care for it just because it changes the vowel sound. It's not like you say A-manda, you say Ah-manda. But given that Jack is a nickname for John, in the long run I don't think it matters. So it will probably work as a nickname as long as you say "Oh, she goes by Amy."

Yeah, that's basically how we say it.

But we say Ay-me. Not Ah-me.

I think Amy could work. :)
I really like the name Amanda. Then again, it could be the influence of the person you know with the name - I have an awesome supervisor at work by that name, plus I liked it to begin with, hence the good association :)

I don't mind Amanda, and I think Manda and Mandy are cute nns. I probably have a slight preference for Mandy. Like the Barry Manilow song. =)

These are the nn's that the Amandas I know use:
Mandy/Manda
Ama
Andy
Meko

So... I don't see why you couldn't use Amy.

I love the name Amanda. Mandy, Manda, Mandar, Manders, Mani...

I know a lot of people (probably at least a dozen) who go by a nickname that's nothing like their first name. Either it's a middle name, or a nickname based on a middle name... or something that has nothing to do with what it says on their birth certificate.

My sister is an Amanda. She goes by Mandee, but her friends also call her Manderz.

Personally, I don't like it.

I go by Manda or Mandi amongst my friends (my EXTREMELY close friends being the ones who call me Manda the most), and I have a friend who calls me Manders.

I like Amanda. It's my favorite cousin's name.

This may sound weird, but our whole family calls her Man. Sometimes Aman.
