(no subject)

Do you prefer the spelling:

Anja or Anya?

What do you think of the name Sarai (maybe as a middle name for Anja)?

(I prefer Anja, partially because I had a great grand Aunt with that name, but I'm kind of afraid that people will read it as An-juh)

i prefer anya.

I prefer Anya. I know Anja is pronounced the same way, I just instinctively want to say An-juh. I think Sarai is pretty.

I prefer Anya. If you're going for pronunciation, I would go with Anya if you live in the US and Anja if you live in Scandinavia and whatever other places pronounce the j as a y (sorry, I'm not familiar with the way most places pronounce things, just with the US and other English-speaking countries, plus Denmark).

I prefer Anya as well.

Anja is a pretty old-fashioned name here, so to me, Anya is more modern.

I read it as An-juh. Every time. Even though I KNOW it's supposed to be An-yah. :/

I like Anya better.

Agreed.

This.

Anja because that's my mother's name! :D

I prefer Anya.
Sarai is beautiful, I've always loved it (but I think Sara is blah, go figure), but in italian it would be silly as a name, because it's already a verb and means "you will be". Maybe that could be cool when used in a different language :)

Anya Sarai sounds lovely-beyond-lovely!

Although I'd prefer Anya to be short for something.

Usually it's Anastasia.
But I guess dad-to-be wouldn't quite agree to this one :P

It is also pretty much used as a name on it's own, so it could get by!

I like Anja Sarai, but if you are in the US, I think you should definitely use only one or the other. It's a gorgeous name, but it will be misspelled constantly. My name is Melissa Elena and most people can't even spell that, so throw in a little exotic influence, and I'm sure they'd be totally lost.

Anya. I really can't look at Anja without wanting to say An-juh. Part of me is surprised that they're even the same name.

is sarai pronounced like sara?

i like both anya and anja

[identity profile] and-after-that.livejournal.com 2008-08-19 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
no, Sarai is more like Suh-rye (accent on the second syllable). It is originally from the Bible-- it is what Sarah (Abraham and Sarah) was named before she became Sarah.

This is why I do not like Sarai. The story gives it a primitive, ugly feeling.

I prefer Anya. And I looove Sarai, it used to be my favorite.

Anja

[identity profile] nandy-pandy.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
Anja, definitely. But yeah, people would fuck up the pronunciation.
