The Olympics is a treasure trove of "interesting" names, though I try not to judge most of them TOO harshly...differences in culture and all.

However, I HAVE found one name that I do LIKE...one of the Australian divers.

Briony

WDYT?

Same. And "Atonement" solidified my hatred of the name.

I prefer the spelling Bryony, but still I don't care for it too terribly much.

Her name is pronounced funny. Usually its Bry-ony and hers is Bree-ony. The poor girl would have to spend her entire life pronouncing it.

It's a fairly common name for people born late 70s early 80s in Australia and it's traditionally Bry-ony. That was the first time I've ever heard it Bree-ony.

I'm Australian, and I'd pronounce it Bree-ony. Perhaps it's regional.

I've heard it pronounced BREE-ony, only. In the US and UK. Not very common in either place, though.

Totally not related to this but they were talking about a swimmer from the Netherlands and he has a one year old daughter named Daphne. How cute is that?

And I kinda like Briony but I'd never use it.

I like it as well, though I'd always connote it with Ian McEwan's novel and its movie counterpart (Atonement).

I love the Olympics for names. I was waiting for someone to say the same thing!
I'm Australian, Briony is not a very common name, at least where I live. I don't really like it.

Heh, I find a couple of weird names watching the Olympics: Brent (sounds like Brett + Trent) and Lleyton (prn like Layton)

I prefer Bryony like this (original spelling, I believe), but only for girls anyway.

Haha... Lleyton is another Aussie, and I have heard of Brent here in Australia too. Out of all the many countries in the olympics how come everyone's picking up our names as interesting? :p (just kidding)

Its funny, isn't it? Those names don't make me batt an eyelid.

Is Brent unusual outside of the USA? I've heard it everywhere, but I rarely leave the country.

During the last Winter Olympics, I saw an Italian ski jumper named Giacomo and named my dog after him. That's as much as I remember about the skier.

It's funny that you find Brent weird, because I've known a guy named that my whole life, so it sounds normal to me! :P

(For reference, I'm Canadian lol).

I'm from Atlanta and I went to school with several Brents. I didn't know it was unusual.

I've always heard it BRY-on-ee as well.

Not a fan. It's a weed. Used by the Romans for digestive issues.

I don't like it bree-ony, the way she apparently pronounces it; I do like Bry-ony though.

God, speaking of names at the Olympics, I saw a Jessicah. I thought it was pretty ugly.

I like it better spelled Bryony.
