Article in my local(!) newspaper today:

Jayden comes in third as most popular boy's name.

This may not sound surprising...but I'm living in The Netherlands. I knew it was getting more popular here, but third? In my town? Yeah.

The article also mentioned that it was supposedly derived from the Biblical name Jadon, and that Jayden could also be used as a girl's name.

Also, the newspaper's suggestion: "If you do not want your child to be in class with 5 other Jaydens, you could always use an alternate spelling such as Jaden, Jadyn & Jeadan." (I guess that last one's a typo and should be Jaedan...not that that would make it any better).

Spelling it differently doesn't help. The thing about having multiple people with the same name in one year is it's annoying when someone is talking about you or calling your name. Spelling it differently really isn't that helpful.

I've always found that logic seriously flawed. Because Layla will still be confused with Leighlah, regardless, ya know? The last initial will still be tacked onto the name, duh. An "alternate" spelling is... ridiculous. Wow.

I did find a biblical reference to the name - though one has to remember Hebrew has no J sound and there are no vowels in traditionally written Hebrew which is why the vowels can sometimes be moved about - and 'a' in Hebrew is 'ah' not 'ay'.

Still don't like it, the meaning helps that not...

So I am really wondering if this whole Madison, Mackenzie, Jayden, Hayden, Aiden thing is worse than Ashley, Jessica, Christopher, Jason, and Jennifer was in my school growing up.

Yes, it definitely is. Although all of those names were popular, there really aren't any alternative spellings, and if there are, they were totally laughed at by everyone, not celebrated as "unique."

Yeah. I can just see my kids sitting in class with 6 Aidens and 5 Mackenzies, and them being the only ones by their names. Although I hear Audrey isn't too uncommon, but I've not heard it much where I've lived.

But here's the thing: Audrey might not be uncommon, but it's still a far cry from being really popular. Your kids have a very good chance of being the only ones with their names (I just looked at your profile) although there might be another Jessica. I doubt it, though. I only know one kid under the age of 10 named Jessica/Jessie or anything.

Yeah. There's a long story why we named her Jessica. In my age group there are tons of them. But in hers, not so many.

I read it in a comment to another post about 30 seconds ago. I like it a lot more than Faith Noelle, and even though Jessica isn't really my style, I do really like the nn Jess and I think Jessica Noelle is very pretty. Audrey Kay is gorgeous:)

Thanks! :)
I like Jessica because it suits her. If you knew her, you would say so I am sure. We call her Jessie, but someday when she's older she can decide what she wants to go by.
Audrey Kay suits her, too. She's named after my Husband's mom.

I think Jessie is very cute on little girls, and I love the name Jess on older girls/adults, probably because several of my very close friends (we're all 80s babies) are named Jessica and go by that. I've always liked it:)

I love names that have meaning, too, so that makes me like Audrey Kay even more. Unfortunately, my parents' names (Kim Renee & Timothy Glenn) are totally not my style, so I'm hoping that if my future gf/partner wants to name our kid after her parents, they have good names;) I'm going with Margaret, after my grandmother -- I'll call her Meg.

I wouldn't lump Christopher in there, it wasn't really a "trend". it's been consistently popular over the years, and is currently still in the top 10 (though that doesn't make allowances for all the names with multiple spellings which would be in the top 10 if yu consolidated them. point is, though, that Christopher is still used a lot.)

Well, all I am saying is I knew a TON of Chris'. Like, at least three in each class I had.

I know! That doesn't change how you pronounce it, so they're going to call out "Jaden Alterman, Jayden Brown, Jayden Carson" and so on during roll call! haha. Way to make your kid feel unique, right?

lol... the spelling it a different way argument is so stupid. Now all the Jaydens will be frustrated by two things-- that their name is common, and that it has no standard spelling and people always ask how they spell it.
