[identity profile] labyrinth56.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
i'm about two months pregnant and my boyfriend and i are trying to choose baby names. for a girl i think we've decided on cadence mackenzie, but we're having trouble thinking of a first name for a boy. we pretty much have it narrowed down to lucas, gavin, jackson, and hunter. any thoughts?

Faves are lucas, jackson and hunter. Particularly hunter, just because I think it sounds kick ass :)

I adore Gavin and Hunter, and I like Lucas. I hate Jackson. I find it very trendy and annoying.

... At least you're consistent?

Have you heard of the Baby Name Voyager (http://www.babynamewizard.com/voyager)? Try typing in every one of those. Cadence, Mackenzie, Hunter, the whole lot.

The consistency isn't just that all of the names you like are popular right now but that all of them are experiencing sharp SPIKES in popularity (which around here is generally referred to as "trendy", as opposed to "popular"). The problem some of us have with names experiencing these spikes is that what goes up sharply tends to come down sharply, and then the name quickly sounds dated and tacky a generation or so down the line. Observe the following name spikes:

Donte/Dontae (http://www.babynamewizard.com/voyager#prefix=DONT&ms=false&sw=f&exact=false)

Clovis (http://www.babynamewizard.com/voyager#prefix=CLOVIS&ms=false&sw=f&exact=false)

Stephanie (http://www.babynamewizard.com/voyager#prefix=STEPHANIE&ms=false&sw=f&exact=false)

Brittany/Britney/etc. (http://www.babynamewizard.com/voyager#prefix=BRIT&ms=false&sw=f&exact=false)

Gladys (http://www.babynamewizard.com/voyager#prefix=GLADYS&ms=false&sw=f&exact=false)

Linda (http://www.babynamewizard.com/voyager#prefix=LINDA&ms=false&sw=f&exact=false)

Gary (http://www.babynamewizard.com/voyager#prefix=GARY&ms=false&sw=f&exact=false)

Michelle (http://www.babynamewizard.com/voyager#prefix=MICHELLE&ms=false&sw=f&exact=false)

All of them sound very OFF now, because they're all date-stamped to a very particular trendiness time. Believe it or not, once upon a time baby Mildred (http://www.babynamewizard.com/voyager#prefix=MILDRED&ms=false&sw=f&exact=false)'s parents thought they were giving their daughter a cute, sweet name, and they chose it 'cause they liked the sound of it! Just like, well, you.

If you don't mind your child being the Gary or Gladys of future generations, then hey — who am I and who are we to stand in your way? You CERTAINLY won't be alone in your decision.

...what was the point of commenting with this?

The prompt was "Your thoughts". So I responded with mine — AND provided a reference tool many expectant parents have appreciated.

But out of mutual curiosity, what was the point of your comment? Were you confused about my intent?

it just seemed really unnecessary and kind of rude.

Sorry to offend your sensibilities.

To be fair, though, that doesn't answer my question, and I answered yours.

But let's leave it, as obviously you and I seem to be on different communicative channels; there's no point in creating even more hissing static when the OP can either choose to utilize the link I provided or not, to neither of our benefit or detriment.

lol. so eloquent. A+

Lol, perhaps she was referring to her own comment being unnecessary and rude?

I disagree. It's reasonable to suppose the OP wasn't aware of how 'trendy' the names are and I see nothing unnecessary or rude in pointing out a statistical fact and the potential for a name to date very quickly.

Lucas isn't a favourite of mine, I prefer Luka so much more, but it is nice. Gavin really just isn't my thing, but I hate Jackson. I hate it. I am a fan of Hunter, on girls, but I don't hate it on guys.

I think that Lucas Hunter sounds good. And congrats on the pregnancy, of course.

I like Jackson a lot, makes me think of Jackson Pollock. Lucas and Hunter are also nice. I've never been a fan of Gavin.

I like Jackson, but the only one of your names I would go for is Lucas (which I love), because it's the only one that has generational appeal and won't sound dated in ten-twenty years.

I like the sound of Cadence Mackenzie, and out of your boy names, I like Gavin best.

Also, kudos for not caring about popularity =)
