[identity profile] starzysky.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames

For fun...my guy & I were talking about names & we love August for a girl.  I like August Kate, but Kate is taken by family.  Any suggestions for something similar?

Also... we are obsessed with Roman names (obviously) and our cats are named Augustus & Livia.  We call them Gus & Livie.

Anyway- fast forward 5-10 years, if I named my firstborn daughter August, would that be weird considering my cat's name?

I see August as a boy's name, because of this cartoon:

I love August for a girl. I've never really understood the boy trend that goes with the name :) I heard 'August Anna' once and I thought it sounded lovely - but I'm not sure if its 'A' overload.

I don't think it matters if your cat has a similar name. My sister wants to name her first child after our (deceased) cat!

You mean... if you marry him and change your name, you'll be Lindsey Leach!

Love August and August Kate and am too tired to think of alternative middle names. But there are lots of other short and sweet names Faye, Jane, or something? I don't know..
I really love your cats names and don't think it would be too weird.

This post gave me the great idea of using the name August instead of Augusten. I would never use Augusten but love Augusten Burroughs!

The only thing that bothers me about it is if she's born in August, I feel like it'd be tacky. If she's not born in August, people might be like "why?" That's why I could never use a month/season/etc. name.

About the cat, you could always change his name to Asparagus like Gus from Cats. Or the mouse from Cinderella is named Octavius but nicknamed Gus. But only if it bothered you.

Livia has been a favorite name of mine for a long time. I love it. I just worry about it being a pain in the ass when people constantly write/say it as Olivia :\

August to me is a boys name, mostly because it is one in my country.
It's cute though, but it's just too boyish for me.

For me it's incredibly masculine, so it'd be really odd on a girl. The cat thing is a bit weird. I personally wouldn't want to be named like a past family pet. Especially not one of the opposite gender.

Ps. And good for you, we need more midwives. Be kind to the vbac-er's. ;)

hmmm... I'd have to go with yes. But shame, really.

August is a boy's name to me too.

I think that August is a boy's name. What about Augusta?

I knew a woman who had her heart set on naming her baby girl August...

Little August will be ten...this SEPTEMBER.

I think it works on a girl, but I don't think any of the nicknames work.

August Bree?
August Frances?
August Faye?

I've also heard of a few girls being called October.

Augusta is a girl's name; August is a boy's name. Augusta Kate is nice. I also like:

Augusta Louise
Augusta Rose
Augusta Jane

I don't think it would be weird. My parents had a dog named Mikey and still named my brother Michael.

That is an argument I hear all the time, and it never ceases to sound totally sexist. Why can't girls be strong with girl's names? Why does femininity always automatically equal weakness?

I think that it would be weird, considering the cat's name. I wouldn't be impressed to know that I was named after an animal. Especially a male animal.

I actually like August as a girl's name and don't think it's too weird since you call your cat Gus. It's a shame Kate is taken though. I love that! What about August Jane?
