[identity profile] sarapod.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
My husband and I are expecting our little girl in September. So far, we have somewhat of an idea for a first name (But aren't referring to the baby by it as it is always subject to change in upcoming weeks or when she's born). For the middle name, I've toyed with Jade, Jay, Jo...I'd really like something that starts with a "J" (Preferably one syllable, also) because the initial is popular in both of our families (Not to mention, James is my husband's middle name and is a HUGE name on both sides). Jo is my sister's middle name, among other things.

One problem, however, with "Jo"...Our last name is King. I didn't realize it at first, but my mother brought it to my attention. Jo King. Joking.

My first question is: If I hadn't mentioned the "Joking" issue, would you have noticed? Throw a first name (Any first name, really) in front and say it out loud a few times. What do you think?

Second question. If we used James as a middle name on a girl...Is that a bit much? It's very popular...Just not for females. I wouldn't want it as a first name because I'm not a fan of "Jamie", but for a middle name? I can't decide. I like it, but then I start to think it may be a bit much, but then I start to think that there are always WORSE names than that, so...Again, what do you guys think? I'm not thinking too seriously about this part, but...it's always nice to keep the options open. :)

Yes, but I would have though of it in Ebonics style. "Jo" meaning "your", same as "joo" means "you". So: "Hey, Homie. I'm jo' king!"

Unless she becomes a comedienne with a stand-up show on Comedy Central called "You Must Be Jo King," Jo is a poor choice.

Wouldn't use James for a girl.

Jodi/e? Joan? Joyce? Jocelyn? Johanna? Joy?

Jo King is definitely too much, plus I think that, while Jo makes a great tail end of a nickname (Abby Jo, Mary Jo, etc), you could do better when it comes to an actual middle-on-paper name.

Definitely save James for when/if you have a boy. Rationalizing a name choice with "it could be WORSE" really doesn't sound like good logic to me when you're talking about a name for your child. I'd think you'd want a name that sounded great, not just one that isn't the absolute worst you could imagine. ;) I wouldn't like it under almost any circumstance, but if you decide that you have to use it, I'd pick a very feminine first name to balance it out. Good luck!

i went all through school with a guy named joe king. he never got teased about it.

i know two girls with the middle name james. one is a teenager, and her fathers name is james. the other is a toddler and her grandfather is james, but her middle name is spelled jaymes.

i think james as a MIDDLE name on girls is fine, even sweet.

i was totally about to mention James King (Jaime). I kinda like the masculinity of the name James for a girl, but i'm also crazy...and hey--my middle name is Jo. :)

Eeeeep. I have to agree. Jo King sounds like the parents were joking when they named her. :(

I actually like James as a middle name only for a girl, if it has a family meaning. As a first name it just sounds trendy.

I like June, Jane, and Julia. :)

What about Jenna James King? You could always call her JJ for short.

I think James would be very cute, even as a first name on a girl, but tend to shy away from J-first names in general. IMO, if you think it's a cool name in it's own right do it, don't do it just to give her her father's name. Although some boy's names are cute on girls, some are terrible-- I would never do this with my husband's name for instance.

As for Jo King... you should totally name your daughter Ima Jo King. Seriously?-- yes it's very obvious.

*edit* Also bear in mind if you plan on having more children, you might want to save the name for a son. I definitely don't think it's cool to reuse the name for different children, and your daughter probably won't like the name once it's used on a brother.

Yes I absolutely would have noticed Jo King. My reason for saying this is because I have already noticed it once before -- on the credits of a TV show once I saw Jo King and pointed it out to the people around me and they all laughed. Even as a middle name, I notice it. Sorry!

I can totally relate to this -- my last name is the same as yours except with a different first letter. Having a -ing name.... well... rules out a lot of names! So many english words end in ing.

I noticed it as soon as I said it aloud. And I think that everybody else would too. That sounds like one of those names that would be posted here and people would wonder what the heck the parents were doing.

I don't like Jade, or Jo, or Jay, but what about Jude, Joss or Joie? I like those.

And hey, babynames.com says that James is unisex. I can see it being kind of cute.

lol, yes, I would have noticed. More importantly, however, I think her classmates in elementary school would notice!

I think Jade is a very trashy name. In fact, the only one-syllable "J" name I like for girls is "Joy." I don't care for Jamie at all. The feminine form of both Jacob and James is Jacqueline, so you may want to consider that, or one of its variations, instead.
