[identity profile] tunknut.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
After finding the top 100 baby names in England/Wales here: http://www.silversurfers.net/family-top100babynames.html I thought the differences between popular names in the UK and in the US were pretty interesting.  I compiled a list of names in the top 100 for 2007 in one country but not the other.

The UK wins, IMHO (although there are some awful and some fabulous names in both camps).

The UK list really surprised me in general, so I'm not sure how accurate that website is.  I'm American and don't really have contact with English/Welsh babies very often though, so I guess I wouldn't know.  Obviously my lists are somewhat flawed; because the US has a larger population there are probably a lot more little Timothys and Carolines running around America than there are little Zaks and Tillys in England/Wales, and the demographics of different ethnic populations account for some of the differences.  I still found it pretty interesting though- I don't know anyone named Alfie or Charlotte and I know tons named Nicholas or Samantha, for example.

Oh . . . one thing I found interesting. For the boy names in the UK, I noticed a few Islamic names (Muhammed, for example), while in the US, there are a bunch of Latino names (Diego, Miguel, Jesus, etc). That's what I would have expected, had I thought about it, but I didn't, so it was surprising for a moment before I realized WHY lol.

Although I prefer the UK names, I'm getting really pissed off with this trend for names like Archie and Alfie. It seriously makes me so much more angry than is reasonable! They do not sound like full first names. Alfie should be short for Alfred and Archie should be short for Archibald (or Archer, if you must). Ok, so those names are all hideous and the shortened versions do sound nicer...but they're horribly twee and trendy-in-an-old-fashioned-way and will sound utterly ridiculous on an adult. How do you expect your son to be taken seriously when his name is ARCHIE??? Argh, it really upsets me :(

The same goes for the girls' names like Tilly and Millie and Evie. People obviously think they're *just adorable* on little girls, but they are just waaaay too cutsie for my taste. I try to imagine an adult woman named MAISIE and I just can't. It's horrid.

Sorry, I have no idea why I suddenly felt the need to rant about that!

I like:

Oliver (my brother's name)
Oscar (my cousin's name)
Toby (though I prefer Tobias)
Rhys (this spelling only)
Louis (as long as it's being pronounced Loo-ee and not Lewis)
Luca
Leo
Reuben
Morgan

Ruby (although I HATE that pretty much everyone is naming their baby this now)
Freya
Scarlett (I think I prefer it with one T)
Amber (guilty pleasure as I think it's a bit trashy)
Matilda

Jackson (guilty pleasure)
Xavier
Blake (purely because every Blake I've ever known has been awesome)

I think the American girls' list is pretty bad tbh.

You don't know any Charlottes? I know at least 5. It's a really common name over here.

I agree with the tunknut. The only Charlottes I've known in the US are old women, except for one 8-year-old daughter of my dad's co-worker. My cousin in London who's my age (20) has at least 4 friends named Charlotte, two of whom I met when I visited her.

Yeah, I think it must've gone out of style in the States and not over here.

The UK has avoided the Jayden phenomenon. Hooray!

British parents (sensibly) tend to avoid made up names, and creative spellings. The tend to use classical names more as well.

The UK names don't surprise me at all, but then I'm name-obsessed as well as an American in Britain.

A lot of the UK names are very nicknamey names. Like Charlie, Alfie, Jake, Archie, Jamie, Ellie, Evie, Katie, Millie etc. I still prefer the UK list but I feel a bit bad for all the Millies and Maisies when they grow up :/

There are so many I like!!!

IDK, I like the US names better. The UK names just sound old fashioned and out of date.

And it kills me to know Kayla is still in the US top 100. It was in the top 100 16 years ago when my sister (who, yes, is named Kayla) was born.

Natalie

I desperately love the name Callum. I actually really like that it's not popular in the US, since I'm not a real big fan of giving kids a top 100 name.

I don't know, they're equally good/bad for me. There's this huge trend in the UK of really cutesy little nicknames like Tilly, Alfie, Maisie, etc. as full names, that I hate...
