why did people EVER name their daughters fannie?

i work at qvc as an order entry rep and a few days ago this woman called from her mothers house, her mothers name being fannie. so i got her phone number to get into her membership, and her name was nacole.

nacole.
nicole, with an A.

i feel like only someone named fannie would name their daughter nicole with an A.

i think i'm going to start writing down the weird ass horrible names i see at work all the time and report back. y/n? could be slightly entertaining, at least.

Nacole is definitly awful, but I'm still not sure if it's worse than NiCole. But Fannie...I think that 'why' is definitly the correct question.

Fannie is short for Frances.

Most popular nicknames become given names after enough usage (see Jack, Alex/Alexa, Molly...)

Oh, and Francine.

(I come from a huge Italian family with a long line of "Aunt Fannies.")

People named their daughters Fannie, because obviously it didn't always mean what it means now. :P

Nacole is silly. I hate when people change the spelling of a name in a way that also changes the pronunciation...

Even without being a reference to your butt, I think Fannie is still a name I'd never consider. It just sounds so... blah.

And Nacole is icky.

I don't know how I'd feel about you compiling a list of the strange names you encounter because it might just make me cry.

I know someone whose wife's name is Fanny. She calls her Fi. NEVER Fanny. Haha. Fanny's from Sweden though, so maybe it's alright there? But moving to England with a name like Fanny...I'm glad she gets called Fi instead.

Fanny is a good name! Fanny Price, anyone?? And besides the fabulous Jane Austen nod, it can be a nickname for Frances, Francine, Francesca, etc. Not my favorite nn,I think Frannie is a tad bit better, but I adored Mansfield Park so much I'm willing to let it slide.
I'd name my daughter Fanny over Nacole any day of the week. ;)

I think Fanny Price's real first name was Frances, though. At least, it implied she was named after her mom or sb whose name was Frances.

And as for that name, I don't think it's any worse than a guy being called Dick instead of Richard.

I could handle Fannie if I didn't know that Fanny is slang for vagina in places other than the US. I would never use it though because of the butt association that is here in the US.

Nacole just really makes me want to call her Nacho.

I did that with weird work names for a while, but I barely got any response, other than people giving me name meanings. It annoyed me probably more than it should have, because I didn't say I'd never heard the name before or that I was incapable of using a name site to find the meaning; I was just saying I found it unusual that someone was actually using it. So I stopped.

But! I vote yes. I'm always up for weird real-life names.
