Some parents have been branded abusers because of the bizarre names of their children.

 Family Court Judge Rob Murfitt stated his concerns in a written decision after a custody hearing in New Plymouth revealed a couple had named their child Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii.

He was so disturbed at the effect on the nine-year-old that he ordered her temporarily placed under court guardianship so a suitable name could be chosen.

 "It makes a fool of the child and sets her up with a social disability and handicap," he said.

The girl, who had not had her birth officially registered in NZ, had not revealed her name to her friends.

The judge was stopped talking yesterday by Principal Family Court Judge Peter Boshier. His office did provide some New Zealand-registered names the court knew of.

They included: Fish and Chips (twins), Masport and Mower (twins); boys Yeah Detroit, Spiral Cicada, Kaos, Stallion and Hitler; girls Cinderella Beauty Blossom and Twisty Poi; and sex unknown Keenan Got Lucky and Sex Fruit.

I asked my 4-year-old what she wants to name this baby, and while she normally says Elizabeth (from the pride and prejudice movie she's seen 400 times) she once said Cinderella. I had to explain that that isn't even a real name.

My sister Allie worked with 3 and 4 year olds at a daycare last year and one of them wanted to name her new baby brother Lightning, and was convinced that her mother was going to let her do so. She told my sister all the time "Mommy said I could name the baby and I'm gonna name him Lightning!" Allie would say, "Well, I'm sure you and your mommy can talk about it and figure out a name," and her response would be, "Nope! Mommy said I could name him and his name is Lightning!" She left before the baby was born, so we don't know what his name really ended up being.

This is why I don't believe in TOTAL freedom of naming, although I obviously don't think we should be like the countries that you can only choose names of a permitted list either.

And I'm assuming that none of these people are celebrities. See, regular folk can name their kids really stupid things too!

You know, I don't think that I've ever thought it before, but name your kid Sex Fruit or Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii, then yes, your children need to be taken away so that their names can be changed. After this, I really don't think that people should be able to name their kids anything that they want. A little restriction is never that bad, is it?

And they had this article over in booju_newju, and I was surprised at how many people were all, "I'd rather have lots of Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii's than have the government interfere with my life!" and "I wish that my name was that instead of my plain old boring name!"

I personally think commenting on this article is giving this guy the attention that he wanted when he put that name on his child.

With that said

I think Hitler, Predator, and Sex Fruit are by far the worst names on thier. Come on! How do you explain to your child why you named him Hitler? Unless of course your are a Nazi..which I'm not even going to think about...

I found out that Iceland actually have a law in place that says if its not a traditional (i.e normal) name you can't use it. It might be restrcitive for a lot of people, but I think something like that is a good idea.
