Jul. 23rd, 2008 04:47 amUgh, I need to have me some babies already before I come up with too many names!! Anyone else ever worry they'll get sick of their favorite names before they can use them?
On the subject of two middle names (in a recent post):
FWIW, my daughter had two first names, one middle name, and a hyphenated last name. Our future children will only have one last name.
We've been trying to decide between Jonah Edward (going by Jonah) and Albert Edward IV (going by Edward or Ward). What do you all think of Jonah Albert Edward, (going by Jonah)? I like it, but my main issue is not wanting to use my FIL's name, and if we're going to do that perhaps we might as well just do it. We're pretty sure if we have a second son it will be some combo of Liam (maybe Uilliam), Patrick, and Anthony-- perhaps all three, in that order-- possible nicknames Liam, Paddy/Pat, and Andy.
Girls names!
As I've said before, we like Prism, Alice, and Esme. I know noone here likes Prism, that's okay. However another name we like is Cecily-- can anyone else see the link and is it too much? Other names I like, but aren't our tops, are Ruby, Catrine (or Catherine), Lily, and Eliza (or Elizabeth)
*edit* Okay the link between Prism and Cecily is from The Importance of Being Earnest. A lot of people when they hear Prism say it reminds them of Miss Prism. In the Importance of Being Earnest, Cecily is Miss Prism's ward.
Based on a comment I read-- are -lyn names really that super-duper popular tight now? I've just always thought they were popular in general. Our super-sekret girl's name is an -lyn name and I worry that people will just think I'm trying to be creative with an -lyn name. I actually used to really dislike -lyn names and just fell in love with this one. I'm sure anyone who has seen me post before about this name is annoyed by now, but we're TTC so hopefully soon come! I plan on sharing online once (if) we know there's a girl in there, but not with family until the birth.
Okay, a little OT, but since we all talk about pronunciations and names (words) going together-- a commercial just came on for some dohicky for 'motionless exercise' and I thought they said 'emotionless sexercise. :/
Anywho, night night. Thanks for any input.

Date: 2008-07-23 01:28 pm (UTC)I don't see the connection between those names, but now I'm interested to know what it is. Google was no help.
Didn't the secret name include a J? I'd guess Jaelyn, but that doesn't seem to fit your style, from the other names you mentioned.
Emotionless sexercise? I think I know a few couples who have that machine.

Date: 2008-07-23 01:31 pm (UTC)1) Jonah Edward (LOVE)
2) Jonah Albert Edward
3) Albert Edward IV
I also like Alice and Esme, but not Prism. I think either of those names is gorgeous and would go well with Jonah and with Liam.
As for a second son, I'd go with just Liam by itself instead of using Uilliam. It just seems rather out there and will invite comments from people over why you didn't use William when you'll probably just call him Liam anyway. If it was a nickname that was ONLY a nickname (Jake, Sam, Ben, etc.) I'd say use the full version, but Liam is a legit name on its own. I like Liam Patrick Anthony.

Date: 2008-07-23 01:32 pm (UTC)Also, if you have a middle name that works well for this, you could use initials: AJ, AP, etc.

Date: 2008-07-23 01:34 pm (UTC)No on Prism, yes on all the others, although I vastly prefer Catherine or Katherine to Catrine (made me want to say "ka-TREEN" even though I know Catrines and know how it's pronounced). I vastly prefer Jonah to Albert or Edward, but of the second two, I like Edward better. In general I don't like two middle names because I think it can easily sound excessive, so I personally wouldn't do that.

Date: 2008-07-23 01:35 pm (UTC)I don't think I'm hip enough to pull off Ant. Thanks for the suggestions, though.
I just remembered, weren't you considering enrolling at UNCW? Just curious, what did you decide?

Date: 2008-07-23 01:55 pm (UTC)I like Ruby and Lily. We went with Kathryn for her middle name, so I like it...just a different spelling than yours.
I'm not a fan of Prism, but it's not my child. When we gave Gabby her name, we didn't think about what everyone else liked, we just picked her name. We did try to think of ways she could get picked on at school for her name though...

Date: 2008-07-23 02:07 pm (UTC)I really like just Anthony, no nickname. My little cousin is called this, and we used to call him Tony but then it didn't fit him so it just kind of got dropped. I prefer the full name:)

Date: 2008-07-23 02:21 pm (UTC)I don't really know how popular -lyn names are these days, so I checked the SSA top 500 baby names for last year and there were 20 names that ended with it, but most of them were just different spellings of Madelyn and Kaitlyn.

Date: 2008-07-23 03:33 pm (UTC)Yeah, that's a real issue with nicknames. I like to think of possible nicknames when picking a name, but I don't really care for nicknames. I don't mind 'for short' names.. like people call me 'Mer', but it definitely hasn't replaced 'Meredith' and I would never call myself Mer. My husband on the other hand, his entire family goes by nicknames and it drives me nuts. We were going to name our daughter, had she been a boy, David and I was dead set against him becoming a Dave.
The only reason I'd want a nickname for Anthony or Patrick is that they're family names. And you're right, I hate Tony. :)
Going to edit the post with the link between the names.

Date: 2008-07-23 03:40 pm (UTC)Yeah, I kinda thought the person saying -lyn names were uber-popular was talking out their ass. I think it's just the usual suspect, Carolyn and the like, and then the ones you mention.

Date: 2008-07-23 03:46 pm (UTC)Yeah, I guess I'm just hoping the other kids will think it's cool. I like the name, but my husband loves it. We'll see what happens.

Date: 2008-07-23 03:51 pm (UTC)Catherine is a family name, also my middle name, and I wanted to change it up a little. I was going to pronounce it Catrine-- pronounced ka-treen. How do you hear it pronounced?
Thanks!

Date: 2008-07-23 03:57 pm (UTC)I really love Liam, but I worry about it being too nicknamey. It's also very popular right now, which usually doesn't bother me, but is for some reason. I wanted something Irish and Uilliam is Irish. My husband also has a cousin and uncle named William and I actually don't care for the name that much.
I am really liking Liam Patrick Anthony. I hadn't though of using the three together until today, but it seems nice together. Might make it easier on my mother too (she loves the idea of me using her brother's names, but Patrick is deceased and I think that might be hard on her).

Date: 2008-07-23 03:58 pm (UTC)And I love Mad-ah-line but hate Mad-uh-lyn, but I don't think I'd use it because people would always assume "Mad-uh-lyn."
Katherine (Katie) is my name, so I am all for that. =D

I know this wasn't directed at me, but..
Date: 2008-07-23 04:04 pm (UTC)I really hate the initial thing myself. I think because my brother is a D.J.

Date: 2008-07-23 05:59 pm (UTC)As for your other names I (of course) dislike Prism, it's just not a name to me. Alice, Cecily, Catherine, Lily, Eliza, and Elizabeth are all nice. I prefer Jonah Edward to the other combinations. And my mind cannot figure out how to pronounce Uilliam.

It's definitely not any of the -lyn names you mentioned and can't really be shortened.
Thanks!

Date: 2008-07-25 11:05 am (UTC)Once Evelin broke into the top 1000, beating out names like Louise, I gave up on Evelyn forever. Because we can say "I don't care about trendiness!" all we want, but... I do care. My child should be more than a mere product of her generation.
