Just to make this poll interesting, instead of focussing on name spellings or the like, I decided to look at theme names. All of these names share a "flower" theme, and all are a tad rare. I looked over a list of flower names and chose these as the ones I liked most. Personally, I probably would not use these names for my own child. I'd be more inclined to go with a more common name such as Lily or Violet, just for spelling ease, though I really love some of these names. What do y'all think?

[Poll #678538]

Oh, and Alexandra by far won the last poll, with Alexa second and Alexandria third.

I love the name Dahlia, and I would use it if it weren't for that infamous murder back in the 40s. And I thought maybe most people wouldn't have heard of it, but there's a movie coming out about her this year.

That's the reason I chose other. My cousin had a friend named Dahlia when she was younger and I always thought it was a pretty name. But tonight I automatically associated it with 'The Black Dahlia'.

Of those I like Lilac best; though my actual favourites are Lily, Rose and Iris.

I'd vote Iris if it was included in the poll.

Oh, and as far as I know, Hyacinth has traditionally been used as a male name.

Interesting. I guess it's used for females too because of the flower reference.

But I know for sure there was a male saint named Hyacinth (sometime in the early middle ages? I think) and the name originates from a male character in ancient Greek lore.

Ah! trusty old "Behind the Name" lists it as both m and f, and has the reference to its origin:

Although in The Babysitter's Club Little Sister books, Karen Brewer did name her doll Hyacinthia. Which was weird, but what else would you expect of a 7 year old?

Hahaha remember how she wanted to name her Cynthia, and then Nancy (her best friend) said "Hiya Cynthia!" and Karen thought that was a great name?

Yep! Even as an 8 year old, I still knew that was a stupid name. And that's coming from and 8 year old who thought Denim would be a good name for someone.

I'm oddly drawn to Clover. I can't figure it out - it seems like something I'd hate, but I actually kinda like it!

Lilac sounds close to Lyric which is becoming more popular.

I'm allergic to lilacs though, so I doubt I'd ever use the name!

It's funny because I like these sorts of names, but Dahlia always reminds me of the Black Dahlia murder, Hyacinth reminds me of the Hippo (see icon!!), and Poppy is what we call my grandpa! Or, "Poppies! Poppies will make them sleeeeeeep. SLEEEEEEEP!"

I like Dahlilah when spelled "Delilah" only.

I like Iolanthe. I don't think I would ever name a child that, but I like it.

It's also a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta. :)

Voted Dahlia.

My favorite slightly unusual flower that makes a really cool name is Zinnia. It's very sassy. :)
