I just stumbled upon it on nymbler and I think I kind of like it.

Wow, I had no idea. I've never indulged in Harry Potter either. In fact I was extremely ANTI Harry Potter for a long time. I suddenly don't like the name so much lol

lucindrielle linked you to the wiki article for Severus Snape, who is one of the majour minor characters in HP. :> (Yeah, HP geek here.) Also, the character himself is portrayed rather negatively for much of the books--as a big asshole and a grown up bully. I wouldn't wish that connotation on anyone, to be honest.

I named one of my RP characters Severin

I love that name.

Not for actual people, though, I think - as in my RP's with said character, far too many people laugh and go "Oh, what a dangerous name." - "Severing?" etc., etc.

I don't like the first, because of HP (even though I haven't read the books at all), but I like Severin. Moreso because of the way it looks than the way it sounds.

Severin is the name of a character in Venus In Furs by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch (where the word "masochism" comes from). Here's a summary from wikipedia:

The framing story concerns a man who dreams of speaking to Venus about love while she wears furs. The unnamed narrator tells his dreams to a friend, Severin, who tells him how to break him of his fascination with cruel women by reading a manuscript, Memoirs of a Supersensual Man.

This manuscript tells of a man, Severin von Kusiemski, so infatuated with a woman, Wanda von Dunajew, that he requests to be treated as her slave, and encourages her to treat him in progressively more degrading ways. Severin describes his feelings during these experiences as suprasensuality. Severin and Wanda travel to Florence, Italy. Along the way, Severin takes the generic Russian servant's name of "Gregor" and the role of Wanda's servant. In Florence, Wanda treats him brutally as a servant, and recruits a trio of African women to dominate him.

The relationship arrives at a crisis point when Wanda herself meets a man to whom she would like to submit, a Byronic hero known as Alexis Papadopolis. At the end of the book, Severin, humiliated by Wanda's new lover, ceases to desire to submit, stating that men should dominate women until the time when women are equal to men in education and rights.

Severin is my uncle's middle name, and it was his grandfather's middle name as well, at least as I can remember.
I think it's an okay name. I'd never name my kid that, but that's just my taste. Also, I have no idea how you pronounce it in English.

I have a treefrog Webkinz named Severus.

I also had a pug named Radley.
A collie named Brandy (In honour of. RIP)
A cow named Mabelle.
A reindeer named Olive.
A turtle named Baconseeds (my boyfriend's turtles are Elvis and Baconseeds...).

Anyone else have Webkinz in here? They aren't just for kids...

I think ditching a name just because it's in one the most influential childrens' books of all time is silly.
