[identity profile] partyofthree.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
My husband likes to read fantasy books. We've been thinking of names for our next child so we were talking about any names in the books he reads that come to mind or that he likes a lot. He mentioned Raistlin. I like how it sounds... but if you enunciate like I do... the "st" doesnt really hit me very well. So I thought of changing it to like Railin/Raylin/Railyn/Raylyn OR Racelyn/Racelin/Raislin/Raislyn I dont know though about it now that I've tried to change it. I like the concept more than the name.

Anyways, we're looking for names that match well with our son's name: Kade

I dont want his name, which is short and sweet, to be paired with Euciliptica or something overly exotic, but we do like atypical names.

Our last name is Loftin too.. so keep that in mind.

Suggest me some names for both sexes...thanks.

P.S. none of that Jayden, Kaden, Brayden (barf), Smayden, etc.

Railyn is nice. I don't like Racelyn (very NASCAR) or Raislyn (Raisin!) though.

Well, it could be a lot worse. Redundance isn't necessarily bad unless it really rubs you the wrong way.

Railyn is definitely the best of the bunch if you want to go with that.

I know a little girl named Raewyn. I don't remember where her parents got that, but it has something to do with faeries. I alwyas thought it was pretty and would fit in with the fantasy theme.

i'm really not a fan of railin or any other version of it, but i love giving suggestions. it would help if you included a list of names to give us an idea of what kinds of names you like. do you have one?

Would this be for a girl or a boy? Because Raistlin and all its other spellings sound very feminine to me.

To be honest, I think if you like atypical names, you may want to go with something that doesn't have a -lin/-lyn suffix. These days, I feel like one of three boys is an -aden and one of three girls is a -lyn. Maddalyn, Kaylin, Shaelin, Caitlyn, Aislinn, Brooklyn, Jaclyn...

Plus, anything-lyn Loftin is a bit too rhymey, I think.

I agree with the above poster. Most of those names in those spellings look very feminine. Ray: masculine, and could work well as a male name.

Adding "lyn" or an "i" or a "lin" is very feminine. I think most of those names are cute for girls...except for the "raisiny" one. :)

Rastlin was what I thought of, but it looks like "Rasslin'" which is what you do on the floor with another when you're not wrestling.

I'm sorry I wasn't more of a help.

I know a guy named "Rylan"
I think that goes very well with Kade.

Being a huge geek myself, I *love* Raistlin. (go Dragonlance!) I hate hate HATE alternate spellings, so I wouldn't recommend any of the alternates you suggested, they just look made up, and imo, adding a ton of y's and i's makes one look illiterate. I know what you mean about liking the concept more then the actual name, we were stuck on Seraphim for a girl until finally I had to let it go, not easily, because it really was too 'out-there'. In the end we didn't think it was worth giving our kid a weird name she probably wouldn't like just for the 'concept' of it. I hope that makes sense. I love Raistlin, but I'm not sure if I'd name a child that.

I think they're all horrible. They all sound totally trendy and made up. Cue 25 comments about how they're "REAL NAMES" - that's not the point. The point is they SOUND made up and stupid.

All those versions of Raylyn and crap are right in line with Kayden and Aidan.
