Thoughts

A client of mine came in with her gorgeous blonde, blue-eyed 5 year old daughter named DaVinci. They call her Vinch. The woman was an art major. I was so pleasantly stunned. Thoughts?

Then, my physical therapist has a son named Ryker. Of course I asked and she said her husband was a trekkie (so should be spelled Riker). Thoughts?

Also, I'm a big fan of Mark Twain and have always loved the named Sawyer for a boy. WDYT?

Ryker makes me think of the prison, not Number One.

Ok if you love DaVinci name your son Leonardo, name your daughter Mona but DaVinci is so tacky.

Couldn't they just have named him William, instead of Ryker? I like Ryder, but Ryker looks too... spiky, I guess.

I kinda like DaVinci, oddly enough. I think I'm losing my sanity. "Vinch" is a terrible nn. Even "Davi" would be better.

Aaaaand, the only Sawyer I know is a girl. So... Sawyer is weird to think of as a boy's name.

DaVinci makes me cringe. I don't know much about Star Trek so Ryker sounds like it's only half of the name. Like they've left part of it off.

I love Sawyer though, and I think Finn is a good name as well.

davinci is so far beyond pretensious. i went to art school, and wouldnt name my kid that in a million years. its called trying too hard.

ryker is harsh and only makes me think of the prison.

i love sawyer, huck and finn. sigh.

I think I'm in the minority here, but I really dislike the name Sawyer. I'm not a fan of surname names in general, and Sawyer just sounds especially baby-ish.

I really go for name meanings...

Sawyer doesn't work for me just because it simply means "cutter of wood". *shrugs* One of our main stipulations for baby name is that it has a cool meaning. Ryker is the coolest name mentioned, IMO.

Just out of curiosity, how did you go from artist to fashion designers?

Ew, do not like that. Sawyer wouldn't be as bad-- it's not as blatant.

You're right.. wannabe trekkies-- learn how to spell!!

It's the last name, his first name is William, which IMO makes it even worse for trekkies to use. And they spelled it wrong.

Jean Luc on the other hand.. that'd be cool. Or Spock ;)

DaVinci is quite trashy, on first glance.
Although it would be like Mackenzie (last name and on a girl) so I guess it's creative in a good way, after all?

Sawyer makes me think of one who saws.
Like Parker to me is someone who parks and Trayer someone who stashes trays.
And the list goes on, as you'd imagine..

I always thought it would be cool to have three sons named Sawyer, Finn and Thatcher :-)

I really don't like the name Sawyer either... I don't think of it as babyish, I just don't like the sound of it. It reminds me of Soya and Sewer. BUT... I commend the OP on wanting to use it on a boy- I don't like the name, but I can accept it on boys, really can't stand it on girls.

I know a Ryker too! And his mom is not a physical therapist, so that means there are two of them running around.

I'm not a fan.

DaVinci and Vinch are terrible, terrible.... (middle name Cody?)

Incredible how a Renaissance genius can be turned into something that sounds like a hooker.

I was a huge trekkie when I was younger and had Riker was on my list:)

I love Sawyer....and DaVinci is actually kind of striking to me. I'm not sure how I'd feel about it on an adult, but on a little girl I kind of like it.

this. Good grief what was she thinking? "Everyone will know how intelligent and artsy I am if I burden my daughter with a famous Italian surname!"

I think the name DaVinci is okay as a first name. Don't like "Vinch". Also, it's great that she chose a name that actually means something to her. That's the most important thing, really. I really don't get why some people assume that others use baby names to impress others.

Riker is not great as a first name, I think (and I like Number One!). And the misspelling is yuck.

I like Sawyer. (If the etymology doesn't bug you, that's fine.) :)

Maybe DaVinci would sound better diminutised as Davi..."dah-vee". (?)

I think in the year 2008 most people are going to think of Josh Holloway when they hear the name Sawyer and not Tom but hey that's just me.

I agree, Leonardo or Mona would be more appropriate than er DaVinci for a honorary name.

Ew. To both of those. Just, ew.

I love Sawyer, but I love it on a girl. Sawyer Kate is one of my top girl names...and no, I've never watched Lost. But I've been made well aware of the connection.
