My husband and I are having serious problems coming up with names. So far I've got these to pick from:

Girl
Sophia
Sienna
Brielle

Middle name will definitely be Marie for a girl. I know it's classified as "filler" but our grandmothers both share this name and we want to keep it in the family.

Boy:
Chase
Liam
Owen

Have no idea what middle names for the boys would be. I love Lucas, but that doesn't really work with these names.

I know they're really popular, but apparently my husband is oblivious. Any thoughts on these names or suggestions for other names he might like?

Thanks!

I like Sophia and Liam. They are popular, but they're great names, IMO, and much nicer than Brielle, Sienna, Chase, and Owen which aren't at all "classic" and fall more into the "horrifically trendy" category.

Sophia and Liam sound like they could work on adults. The others do not. At all.

I agree with this, except I think Owen is fairly classic too. The Owens I know are in their twenties/thirties and have siblings named Alexander, Katherine, Rachael, Robert and Dominic...so I don't tend to think of it as particularly trendy.

I happen to think Owen is pretty classic. Liam seems a lot more trendy imho.

I also really like Sophia though. The other two aren't bad but Sophia is the best of the three. But None of them are bad names.

Sophia is pretty but might be to common now. Sienna is nice and not as popular as Sophia so your child would have less chance of being in a class with another 2 or 3 kids with that name. Not too familiar with Brielle.

I quite like chase for a boy. Very cool.

From Nymbler, you may like:

Adeline
Avril
Alana
Nora (which I adore. Not too trendy, sounds great with Marie)
Claire
Sadie
Bridget
Willa

Gavin
Gabriel
Reid
Blake
Logan
Parker
Collin
Simon

The only names of yours that I like are Sophie and Liam (and kind of Owen). The other girls names and chase are horribly "trendy". I don't mind if names are popular, but I like more classic names.

I don't think Sienna is trendy, as much as it is newly discovered. Sort of like Emmaline or Evangeline. These names are around for decades and rarely used and then someone in the spotlight has that name or uses it for one of their kids, and it becomes better known.

I like Sophia (that's what we are naming our daugher). I'm not sure why Sophia is popular, I've never known anyone with that name..

I like Owen, as well.

I love Sophia but it's super popular now, and Sienna is just okay to me but it's also really popular now. But Brielle is really nice, so I'd definitely say that's the best on your girl list. And Brielle Marie sounds very nice.

For your boys list, I think Owen Lucas sounds nice except I sort of feel like it's a celebrity's full name? I don't know, though. And Liam Lucas doesn's really work because they both start with L, but William Lucas, nn. Liam would work, I think. Chase, with any middle name, always sounds like an instruction, like "Chase Lucas!" instead of just a name, to me, haha.

How do you pronounce Brielle? This is the first time I've heard of it.

Is it Bree-elle? Or Bri- elle?

I probably would pick Brielle over Sophie. Its just the popularity thing for me. I think a name should be unique and you can't really get that with a top ten name. I really love the name Ava but I would never call my child that, because its just way too common now.

I say it Bree-elle, like Gabrielle, but I don't know if my way is the only way.

Maybe cause of Owen Wilson and Luke Wilson? Or George Lucas. But yeah, I think Owen Lucas sounds nice too.

I think all your names are okay. I particularly like Liam. Not a fan of Sophia, just cause my name is Sophie and people are always trying to call me Sophia. Pet peeve. But it's decent.

I love the sound of Sophia Marie. I'm a middle name Marie, myself, and I'm as tired of the whole filler argument with it as I am of people announcing that names rhyming with Aidan are, oh, my god, like, totally overused, like they're the first person to have noticed.

I love Liam. Liam Chase sounds good to me, if you're not wanting to keep Chase handy for a potential second son.

marie is my middle too. it was my mothers middle, so was after her, and her mothers first name. so its not a filler for my family.

Girl
Sophia: Don't mind it (prefer Sophie).
Sienna: This one sounds really trashy to me.
Brielle: I wouldn't mind it as a nickname for Gabrielle, but I don't think it works on an adult. To me it sounds incomplete/young/cutesy/etc. Why not Gabrielle/a with Brielle as a nn?

Boy:
Chase: One of my all-time most hated boys' names. =( Sounds like the obnoxious school bully to me.
Liam: Love it!
Owen: Like it a lot: yes, it's trendy, but not in an obnoxious way, I don't think.

Suggestions:

Ryan
Isaiah
Ian
Neil
Sean
Evan
Lachlan

Chloe Marie
Eileen Marie
Amelia Marie

i really love sophia, liam and owen. i prefer sophie, and william as a full name with liam as a nickname, however.

i think owen lucas or lucas owen is nice. i also think sophia marie is very pretty.

i dont like brielle or chase at all. sienna is just ok.

I like the name Brielle; I know a girl who goes by it (it's not short for anything, but it is her middle name) and I think it's so pretty and it's so nice on her. I think Sienna and Sophia are kind of ugly, to be honest.

I really like all the boys names. I think Owen Michael would sound nice. That's the only thing that came to mind.

i like sophia the best out of the three girl's names. brielle sounds kind of trashy to me. i love the name bree though. sienna seems too trendy. sophia is hugely popular these days though.

i like all of your boy's names, but they're all pretty common right now, especially liam. that's my favorite though. why don't you use one as a middle name? for example: owen chase, or liam chase? i think that flows well.

I think that Marie goes well with Sophia and Sienna, but not with Brielle. Brielle and Marie have the same pattern in terms of the second syllable being stressed, so it doesn't sound as good.

I'd pick Sophia anyway out of those three even if Brielle did sound good.

Of the boys' names, I love Liam but don't like the other two. I think Lucas would go with Chase and Owen though, and not so much with Liam although it does depend on your last name- the only thing is that it'd be alliterative and the same stressed syllables, so it would only work with certain last names probably.

Anyway- my votes go to Sophia and Liam!

Maybe the two of you could go through a list of names and each of you shortlist a whole bunch.... and then you can rate your own out of 10, rate each others' out of 10, and then add up to see which names had the highest collective score (meaning that you both must have liked it to some extent- if one person hated it and another loved it it would only come out medium). You might find there are some "compromise" names you hadn't even thought of.

Personally, I think Lucas fits well with either Chase, Liam, OR Owen. Except.. Owen Lucas.. is like .. an actor, or something. I think. I d'no.

I like Sienna Marie for a girl, though. My middle name is Marie, and my grandmother's is too.

I hate hearing that my middle name is a 'filler', because.. wtf. I don't think any name is a filler name. They all have meaning. Marie is just popular. But it still retains dignity.
