matchy matchy children's names... Would you do it? Do you think it's tacky? Annoying? Awful?

I read several blogs and this blog was linked.. after looking at their names I don't think I will add them as my blog reads...

• Kaira (Age 8)
• Kendra (Age 6)
• Keianna (Age 4)
• Keegan (Age 3)
• Kieran (Age 1)

Thoughts?

I hate matchy-matchy names. Tacky, annoying and awful. I don't know why though; it seems like parents are treating their kids as something cutesy that will never grow up or something.

It seems like matching names would be harder for the children to establish an identity beyond the family, problematic when it came to items with their initials on (e.g mail, things labeled for school, etc), and just plain getting the names mixed up with all the similiar sounds.

So no I wouldn't do it, and as a name geek I'd hate to be limiting myself like that (but then I make a point of never repeating intials, so much the same problem).

I don't mind it if two children in a sibset begin with the same letter, but any more than that I usually don't like. Especially in this case, where it seems like they all start with really similar syllables.

Yea I agree. I find it nauseatingly tacky.

i like some matchy names by accident. like i'm a huge fan of names that begin with El or just E in general, and if i wasn't terribly bothered by matchy names i'd probably name my children elliott, elisabeth, eisley, and eleanor. but, i won't because i agree that it's annoying and somewhat tacky.

I think it's all three: tacky, annoying, and awful. I would never do it.

Yeah, they're awful. With two kids, if the names are different enough (ie, Andrew and Adam, not Andrew and Andrea), it can be okay. For example, my cousin's daughters are Kelsey and Katelyn, and while I'm not a huge fan of either name, they sound okay together. However, if they had another one (which they most likely won't), it would be a little much.

These names are awful. The only one I like is Kendra (which I actually love) and the rest are HORRENDOUS, especially Kaira and Keianna.

People who use matchy matchy names MUST have been only children. I got called my sister's name all the time growing up and our names aren't remotely similar. If our names were Kendra and Keianna I'd have gone crazy.

I am part of a matchy sibset (April and May) and while I don't mind it, I'd never do that to my kids.

Okay maybe we're more themed. But same idea.

I don't like matchy names. A lot of the names on my list start with the same letter or rhyme, though, but I'd never use them together.

I did give matchy names to a sibset of characters in a story I wrote: Linda, Leslie, and Larry.

My two kiddos will have semi-matchy names: Joseph and Juliet. Buuuuut, they don't have the same number of syllables and come from totally different languages. *shrug*

One of my friends is one of seven kids, all with K names... I'm definitely not fond of it. I'm not at their house much but I can only imagine how many times the siblings get called by the wrong name.

I don't mind it if there are only two kids in the family, and they have the same initials. Same if there are a whole bunch, and a couple, say, start with K and the others are different.

As for more than three kids, all with the same letters, I think that's terribly tacky. Also, that really limits the quality of names, don't you think? I mean, I tend to love names that start with A, for some reason. But if I had enough kids, eventually I'd run out of A names that I loved.

I think it depends, for me. I probably wouldn't do the same first letter for my own kids, but I don't think it's always tacky. That sibset you listed is WAY too matchy because the names all SOUND so similar. If they weren't so alike, maybe it wouldn't be so bad.

Example: Emily, Erin, Elizabeth, Everett, Edmund. None of them sound too similar.

But Kaira, Keianna, and Kieran?!? Not cool.
