[identity profile] batting0.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
This past weekend I was in Gettysburg, PA for a memorial statue dedication for George Custer and my Great-Great Grandfather (who saved Custer's life... :) )

And I saw this charmer of a name::

Elishua

Anyone want to take a stab at how that's pronounced, because I didn't hear!
Also, take a guess at what sex the child was. I'll post when there's a few guesses. or at least one.

*Edit* Yep, male. I had no idea it was a biblical/real name. I thought is was a combination of Elijah and Joshua that someone just made up or something...

Male, Biblical, it was popular in the 17th/18th/probably into the 19th century.

E-lee-shoo-ah. And since it sounds like Joshua, I'm going to have to say male.

Looks like a variation of Elijah? So, ee-lie-shooah.

I'd probably pronounce it el-EE-shu-ah, but maybe it should be el-LIE-shu-ah

A lot of Hebrew male names started with Eli... but then again, so does Elizabeth so maybe it's not such a male thing

It still looks made up to me too, I'd never heard of it and I'd have assumed the same thing. And I still think it's just as ugly, knowing it's a 'real' name, as I did when I first read it and thought it was made up.

Also, it looks like a girls name at first glance, because it looks like Elisha, which at least to me is only a girl name.
