[identity profile] ladyofmoonlight.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
Okay, since I couldn't think of any other names that are commonly spelled more than two different ways, I decided to do a different poll. I found the ten most popular baby girls names for 2004 in the US here:
http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/
I wanted to see if everyone here went along with which names were the most popular, ie if Emily got more votes than Emma got more votes than Madison, and so on.

I think it's really interesting to see what the top ten names are right now. I've known many people who thought they were being original or different by naming their children Emily, Madison, Olivia, Abigail, and Isabella. Then again, my parents thought they were being different by naming me Megan back in 1982. They didn't realize they were kind of going with the flow there. Oddly enough, their other choices for girls names were Emily, Lauren and Amanda, but they felt all those were too popular and wanted to go with the more "unique" Megan. I don't think I was ever known by my first name alone, even in college.

For some reason, I find it really hard to pick out boy names! Good luck with that, though.

Emma was my favorite name about 10 years ago, or actually I wanted Emmanuelle with the nn Emma. It was already climbing at that point, but really started to surge soon after. I'd never consider using it now, but I still like it.

I really don't care for the others much.

Geeze, my name is still popular? I guess people really like the name Samantha. :]

And I love most of the names on the list, so I can understand why they're so popular. I think Emma and Emily are beautiful and classic.

I don't like any of them. I don't like common names too much.

My parents thought the exact same thing when they named me Meagan in the 80s.

I decided to name my first daughter Hanna when I was 12, when my grandmother Hanna passed away.

That was 13 years ago, and I'm annoyed it's so popular, but I'm STILL going to use it. I think it's lovely.

I'm in love with Emma. My boyfriend and I have always wanted to name a baby Emma. I had no idea it was so popular until I read that same list in the newspaper one day. Now I'm totally bummed because I refuse to let any of my kids have a name that is in the top 10. I can see why Emma is #2, though. It is so pretty and feminine and sweet!

I really like Olivia and Hannah as well.

My name is Emily, and I love it. I wouldn't choose another name for myself in the whole world.

That being said, Emma is cute too...but it's a nickname! Don't name your child a nickname!

I DESPISE the name Abigail. I think it is just the ugliest name out there. I also hate Olivia.

I voted for Elizabeth, but I MUCH prefer Elisabeth

I voted for Elizabeth, because I have always loved that name. Partially because it's my middle name. ;D

But also because Elizabeth Bennet is quite possibly my favorite literary character of all time.

I think it's funny that Isabella is on there, because my mom considered that for me. But then she went with Rachel, which is probably even more common, at least in my experience. I know tons of Rachels.

My mother insists that no one was named Jessica when I was born.

Which is exactly what everyone else's mothers were thinking. Oh well, I like my name.

My name is Hannah, and I didn't like it growing up. Mainly because nobody ever spelled it right. And I got sick of my mom always telling me the story about how after I was born and she told the nurses I was named Hannah Elizabeth they all went, "Oh, that's so pretty!"

Anyway, I voted for Olivia. I love it, and it bothers me that it's popular.

I like Abigail, Elizabeth, and Hannah (I just don't like how popular it is my best friend's name is Hannah, and her little sister is Emily). I hate Emily, Emma, Madison, Olivia, and Samantha with a passion though.

I LOVE the name Samantha. To bad I named my dog that. I wasn't planning on having kids for a long LONG time so I thought I was safe to use it for the puppy.

Well that bright idea bit me in the Ass.... I guess I could have a Samntha 1 ans Samantha 2.

It would save me the trouble of screaming it twice.... one shot and both would come.
