I disagree with a lot of these. I know people with some of these names and they are far from ever being rich/wealthy...

Blair was the rich girl on the show The Facts of Life.

That's also the name of a rich girl in Gossip Girl

I think they mistook Rich for Trashy...

I was about to say the same thing. I think a good portion of these names are given to kids by parents who wish they or their children were/will be rich, and not rich parents giving their trust fund babies these names.

But, I can only picture the name Bartholomew on a country club type.

There's an interesting phenomena that Jackson Katz, among others, describes where the rich emulate the poor in order to gain some sort of street credit or other believability, and the poor emulate the rich hoping for the other things that come with being rich. Thus poor People of Colour and and rich White folk form gangs but call them different things (gangs verses the Mafia).

A lot of these names were once stuffy rich names, but they have been adopted and emulated by poor people. This is particularly true of status symbol objects becoming names. If you can't own a Porche, call your daughter Porche and pronounce it the most pretentious way you can.

Here's a good quote from the excellent movie "Tough Guise":
"Now one of the really interesting things that's happened in the last decade, largely as the result of the popularity of rap and hip-hop music, is that this urban Black street style has made its way into mainstream culture [...] But we can take this back one step and ask, if masculinity is a pose, where did urban Blacks get the inspiration for their own performance? [...] We have this interesting phenomenon where we have White middle-class males emulating poor Black urban males who are in turn getting part of their idea about manhood from gangster films featuring White Italian men."

I started to leave this as a reply to [livejournal.com profile] jordle but, as I said, I can't imagine that anyone really cares. I just immediately thought of this with the "rich for trashy" and "I know people with some of these names and they are far from ever being rich/wealthy" comments.

Thank you, this was very interesting, and a much better way of putting what I was thinking!

I am not entirely convinced of the eligibilty of that quote (I mean, I'm not sure if that is where black people get their idea about manhood, for example) but otherwise, that's really interesting.

Really they look like tryhard rich names.. like people who want to look richer than they actually are.

But there's probably a good reason for that.... like they're loosely associated with richness in certain ways, which is why they both make it onto this list and get used by said people.

I can actually agree with a lot of these. I agree with another comment though: a few are pretty trashy.

Apart from a few (Chanel, Chastity, Porsha, and Zsa Zsa), I think the girls names are ok, but the boys names are anonther story.
