[identity profile] emtotherescuee.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames

Alright, so, here's some background info:
My name is Emily. It's too popular. I hate it.
< /background info >

I'm going to this camp next week in NYC (I live on Long Island, so even though it's only like an hour away, it's far enough that there'll be no one i know there) for about five days, and I thought maybe as a little experiment, I could try introducing myself with a different name, just to see how it feels to not be "just another Emily".
So I need some help.

I tried looking around, but seeing as I'm posting here, I obviously haven't found any names I like. My "new name" should start with an E, and really preferably, an EM, so my nickname can stay the same. It cannot cannot cannot cannot cannotttt be popular, because that's why I'm "starting over". So no Emmas, please. All I need is some suggestions.
And if it has a cool meaning, that would be fantabulous.

Thank you all so much:D. As a present for helping me out, I'll post some of the interesting names I encounter at camp for you all!

(And, if any of you care, my middle name is Kaitlyn, which I don't mind as much)

ETA:
Oh, and I see a lot of you are suggesting Emilia, which is a nice name, but I think it's just too close for comfort, you know? How about you guys post your favorite E names (for girls, haha). I like kind of fluffy names, like Hannah, or Lucy, but neither of those because a) they're too popular and b) they don't start with E:]
Thank you all so far for responding, it's given me lots to think about!

Oh, and, maybe a visual aid? Just to see if the name fits the girl, you know?:

(Posing with friends, so that would explain the weird face/posture)

agreed.
But it's very hard to find names that begin with Em that aren't related to Emily in some way.

I really like E names for girls, here are my favorite ones:
Elizabeth (Ella)
Evangelina
Elettra

Emily and Emma are on my list too :P

BUT! How about Elliot? :) It's not Em, I know, but it's cool!

My first thought was that you could go by your middle name, that's always a good call, as it's a half truth, so you don't find yourself in uncomfortable spots later on.

Other E name suggestions:

Esmeralda
Emanuela / Emmanuelle
Eloise / Eloisa

Ellen/Helen and variations all mean the same, in case you like that :)

Plus Kaitlyn (when you include all the other spellings that are pronounced the same) is probably at least as popular as Emily, especially if you're more than five years old.

Funny you say that people think you don't suit Kaitlyn, because when I saw your picture I thought you look like a Katie.

You know this is probably going to totally backfire and there'll be no Emilys on this camp :p

Ok, if your nickname is Em - here are names that have em in them -

Clementine
Gemma
Memory

Or, say your nickname is "M" as in any name that starts with M...

From: [identity profile] th3-unicorn.livejournal.com
oh that would be nice, names with M and you go by Em.. clever!

I like this idea, if you're going for a new name, why not a new initial as well?

How about going by a different nickname of Emily? I've known Emilys who have gone by Emmy and Mila. Milly works too - sort of a guilty pleasure of mine.

Also, Em could also potentially be a nickname for names that start with the letter M - there are tons of interesting, out-of-the-ordinary ones that do.

I can't think of any E names I'm especially fond of, other than Emily, incidentally, which I loooove but wouldn't use because it's so popular haha.

Yeah, super-common names are no fun, especially when you're younger... My name was the 16th most popular in the year I was born and it's still too popular for my taste...

Oh my, that's absolutely *incredible*. Who would have thought finding a neighbor on Live Journal, in a baby names community, no less. The smallness of the world, I tell ya.

Howdy, neighbor. :-)

Hehe, I found someone in this very community that goes to the same small, private college in NJ that I JUST dropped out of. *crazy coincidences*

I haven't really thought of anything new that hasn't been recommended already. I like Emmaline, it's really pretty, or you can try some M names. I live in NYC, what parts are you visiting?

I don't really have any that haven't already been suggested, but let us know what you choose!

Not Em, but it has Em in it.. one of our fave girl names and probably our next girl's middle name, Esme.. prone Ez-mee or Ez-may (this is more proper, but I prefer the other).

It's almost impossible to find an Em- name that doesn't follow in a vowel, givng you the emi- or ema- sound.

Ember?

*edit*

You're not worried at all about a counselor or something accidentally outing you? That'd be embarrassing.

I found Emuna, which is Hebrew and means 'faithful'...but I doubt you'll like that ;)

I noticed some comment up there, about M names...so how about those:

Maeve
Maelle
Mara
Madeleine
Mirabelle
Marielle
Marley
Marianne
Myrna

Or else you could always go by Jemima...haha. Good luck finding a name!

I think everyone's covered all the good/creative nn's. You could combine your names to EmmaKait or something... EmKat? I dunno. My brain is fried, I've been painting all day...
