[identity profile] poisonedorchard.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
I'm 36 weeks pregnant with a little boy and STILL have not settled on a name. I often browse this community for inspiration and decided it was time to join and make a decision... or at least try to make one. If all else fails I'm waiting until I see my son and I'm hoping he will look like a name. My fiance would really like the middle name to be "Cade". For a while we were fairly certain we wanted to name him "Rowan", but neither of us were absolutely sure or in love with the name. Then recently I read the name "Cannon" and I came to really like it. I know it's a piece of artillery, but if you just think of it as a name and not a noun, I think it's a great boy's name. I just don't know if it would be one of those names that people would hear and say, "Oh my God! I can't believe she named her son CANNON! Poor kid!". I've known people with noun names and I think after you've known them for a while you forget that their name has another meaning. I used to know a "Gypsy" and now whenever I hear the word I think of her and not of an actual Gypsy.

Sooo.. any feedback or suggestions would be great! Thanks in advance :)

But Cannon is a noun, and you can't change that, nor can you change its meaning. Do you really want to name your son after a weapon? Of course people would get used to it. People get used to pretty much any name. But what kind of first impression do you want your son to give? A huge number of people he comes into contact with won't have the luxury of getting to know him, and your name is one of the first things people find out about you. It's the stamp you carry for your entire life. In my opinion, Cannon is a terrible name. It's trendy, tacky, and gives the impression that the parents were trying to sound 'cool'. But if you honestly think that naming your child after a piece of artillery is a good idea, it's your decision.

I couldn't agree with this more.

You said you liked Rowan. What about Roman?

What about Camden? It's similar to Cannon, but without the weapon imagery.

I really don't like Cade, and I don't like Cannon. I've got no problem with noun names, I just don't like the sound of Cannon, or the way it looks, to be honest.

I love Rowan though, and Gypsy's been a favourite of mine for years.

Eh. I don't like any of those names, but I like Cannon better than Rowan.

I like Cannon, I think its a cute name. And trust me, there are going to be so many other children the age of your child with names that make you say "why did you name him/her that?"

But I would say def not have Cannon Cade

I think it's true that if you name your kid something a bit 'out there' people will double take at it once and then get used to it.
I know a girl called Storm and it seems completely normal to me.

What about Canon instead of Cannon? I personally don't like the name but I suppose a musical name is better than a weaponry name.

Rowan is a decent legitimate name with a long enough history that it won't sound dated or linked to this time period.

Cannon would be nice if it didn't mean what it does... but personally I couldn't even consider using something that means that. I can't stand the name Hunter for the same reason. It's one thing to name a kid something just because it sounds nice but has no particularly good meaning, but it's pretty bad to name them something with an obviously bad or violent meaning, in my opinion. It's also a name that has become popular only more recently so in that sense it is "trendy" and may date easily.

If none of that bothers you, then it's not too bad a name, but those things would bother me enough not to consider using the name. I don't suppose you'd like Cameron? (it means 'crooked nose' but nobody would know :p) I can't think of others that sound similar to Cannon but I'm sure there are. What about Cade as a first name, or Caden shortened to Cade? Only thing is that Caden (and every spelling variant, as well as many names that rhyme with it) is very popular now.

I like it, but that puts me in the minority in this comm-names we're thinking of for our boy include Gunnar, Ryder, and Striker.
I like strong names myself. =)
That being said, Cannon Cade doesn't flow too well, imo.

Stong doesn't have to = violent.

Camden is worse than Cannon I think... it's like the number one city for crime in Jersey, and very high-ranked if not number one in the US.

I... think you might be, with that one. I certainly would think it, if not say it out loud to you and your new babyling.

I love the name Cade. Have you all considered that as a first instead of middle name?

Hmmm, I'm sorry but I have to agree with the majority here. It could be a source of teasing because guns/weaponry have phallic associations.

There's a church near me called Cannon, so honestly I think of THAT before the weapon. But it's a fairly anti-semitic Methodist church so the connotations are even worse to me. I kinda like the sound of it, though. What about Lennon, Brennan, or Brendan instead?
