When I was pregnant with my son, my boyfriend loved the name that I picked out for him (although, we switched the first and middle names around). His name is Alexander Phillip. Before we knew I was going to have a boy, we were set on the girl name of Savannah Rae. The name that I have ALWAYS wanted to name my little girl.

Now, I'm pregnant again (YAY!!!!!!!) and my boyfriend has totally scratched Savannah Rae off the list. I'm so highly irritated!

So now I have to fall in love with a different name (if I have a girl). And as for boy names, I want to let him choose the name. But he wants a "junior", and I don't. I always thought the name sake was supposed to be the first born son.

Thoughts??

And I've been reading lists of names. But I want every one to just give ONE girl name and one boy name (first and middle combos of course). What is your absolutely FAVORITEST name? No lists, no toss ups, number one pick only!

If he totally vetoed your favorite name, I say you should be able to totally veto the whole junior thing.

Personally, I don't like Savannah Rae at all, although it's not the worst name in the world.

I can't pick just one favorite name for a girl, but my favorite boy name (at the moment) is Felix.

Agreed!

Just FYI, in my maternal grandfather's line, "junior" was always given to the second son -- I've done a little geneology research and discovered it was like that for 7 generations. So it may not always be for firstborns!

I personally feel Junior is first born son. Do it any other way and you set your kid up for a complex. When people find out he has an older brother, the questions are going to start and he's going to feel like shit for the rest of his life.

It's been historically and culturally the first born son, because those were heirs to the family. A second born would never get the name unless something was WRONG with the first. :(

Actually, it was never historically anything. It was different in each culture. As said in earlier comments, in many places it was the third son, because the first two were named after the paternal and maternal grandfathers respectively. Also, I don't really see why it would give the kid a complex. I actually know three guys who are second/third born sons who are Jrs. and none of them have complexes about it and nobody ever asks questions, it just is.

I guess I just don't see how it would make him feel like shit for the rest of his life. Granted, maybe he wouldn't like having the same name as his father (I can understand that), but for being the second born and still having the same name as his father? Yeah. I don't see the problem.

That's understandable, and you should definitely veto it if you don't like it. I'm just saying that it wouldn't be a big deal if he's the second son and named after his father.

I actually love the name Michael Ryan (or Ryan Michael, which is my best friend's name, oddly enough), but I can definitely understand not liking it, and I'm not, in general, a huge fan of Jr. names anyway.

I wouldn't think it was weird if I met a second son who was a junior. Big deal. Do you really think people are going to be like, "Oh ... you're the SECOND son? Well, what on earth is THAT all about? Your parents really screwed up there! You should be ashamed!" Why would he feel like shit for the rest of his life? That makes no sense at all. And it hasn't been historically and culturally the first born son to get the father's name. First sons were just as often, or more often, named after grandfathers, or named their mother's maiden name.

I wouldn't totally discount the Junior idea if it's entirely because of the firstborn thing ... if it's because you don't like the name or don't like the Junior idea in general, that's a different story. ;)

Alexander is already one of my favourite names (as is Alexandra), and to go with it my favourites are:

William
Victoria

I'm not putting middles since for me those are almost exclusively family names.

Beau
Ruby (despite its growing popularity)

I don't think ahead to middle names.

Both Ruby and Lucy were probably my top two favourite girl names, but both have been steadily going up. By the time I have kids, they'll probably break the top 100, and that doesn't particularly interest me.

Re: Junior, I agree about the first son. If you name the second son after his father, Number One will think you felt he wasn't good enough (I know two cases of this).

(Btw-these aren't my two favorite names by any means, just helpful suggestions, considering I have tons and tons of names I like)

Boy: Grayson [your husband's first name]
Girl: Zoë Sabrina

I had the boy's middle name be your husband's first, as maybe that could be your compromise instead of a junior. Good luck:]

Daphne Margaret and James Kenneth.

I love older fashioned names, though. I really like Phillip, not a fan of Alexander for personal reasons, although I really like hearing it on other people's kids. I would avoid a junior like the plague. It's just tacky.

I am technically a junior and so are both of my brothers. One of my brothers is actually a cousin and named after his dad, who was named after his dad who was named after his dad and so on for like 5 generations. Then there's my actual brother who is named after our dad and me, first name mom's middle name grandma's and finaly our sister is named after my mom's grandma, just reversed the names.
As for my favorite names right now...
