Amélie

How would you pronounce it if you saw it. Ah-may-lee or just like Emily but with an 'A' ?

Ah-may-LEE, like in French.

Although if you do it with an anglophone accent, it does sound just like Emily.

If it's in French, the accent means the "e" goes up, with an eh sound not an ay sound.

actually it's a sound that is hard to represent in english, because there isn't an equivalent.

The exact "eh" sound is represented by "è" like in "père", "frère". That's what they call an open "e", as opposed to é which defines a closed "e".

Amélie, however, is not Ah-meh-lee, that would sound like someone with a cold :P although again, in the anglophone accent, it all sounds pretty much the same.

It's French. I'd pronounce it the way it was meant to be pronounced-- Ah-meh-lee.

The French way, but I am half French, and speak French at home, so I guess that's not surprising.

Especially if it had the accent mark when I saw it, I would prn. it Ah-may-lee, but that's just because I learned that name in French class :] If I hadn't heard it there or in the movie that I think came out recently? I wouldn't know it was Ah-may-lee, because I've never actually encountered a person named that.

Can't reaally spell it out too well but probably like AH-meh-lie
It's how I'd say it in French anyway. But mostly because you've put the accent over the e. If not, it's open to interpretation with some kind of English pronunciation....

I do like it with the accent, but I think it's a bit hard to give a child a name with an accent in it if they live in an English speaking country though.

Have you seen the movie? They pretty much pronounce it Ah-meh-lee. At least, that's how it sounded to me. :)

I knew a girl in high school named Amelie who pronounced it like Emily.
I'd probably say AH-muh-lee otherwise.
