my name list
Jun. 22nd, 2008 07:13 amHi. :) I think I've posted some of 'my' names here before, but don't think I've posted all of them. My new husband and I are officially TTC now, so have been discussing names in earnest. Please tell me what you think and if you have any further ideas based on what you see we like. Some of these are hold-overs from when we were naming our first child 5 years ago and we're not quite as enamored of them as we once were; I've put them in order of preference.
We plan on keeping our childrens' names secret from family and friends until they are born. It's good to be able to talk about them online, though. ;) And I know we're being silly, but we're keeping our #1 girl name secret until we're pregnant and know it's a girl.
If it helps, I think our children have a very high chance of having bright to dark red hair and brown eyes, possibly blue or hazel eyes and very pale skin, possibly freckled (going by what I've seen in our families and what our daughter looked like). We plan on having 2-4 more children.
Our daughter's name was Brenna Rose (two first names).
Girls:
*secret first name* Esme
Prism Alice-- my husband's favorite; I came up with Prism as a joke and then really liked it-- I don't like it quite as much as I did at first, largely because people tell me it's too weird, lol, but my husband absolutely loves it and we'll probably end up using it if we have two more daughters.
Eliza Grace
Lily Grace
Lily Rose-- I don't know how I feel about reusing rose, but my husband thinks it might be a sweet homage to our daughter.
Elizabeth Catrine/catherine
Edith Catrine
Gemma Grace
Violet*
Jane*
Antalya*
Sioneva*
Feylin*
Taigan*
Boys
Jonah Edward
Uilliam Edward (nn Liam)
Liam Edward
Patrick Anthony/Anthony Patrick (after my two closest maternal uncles-- Patrick is deceased; nickname, if we use one, Pat, Paddy, or Andy)
Albert Edward IV (nn either Edward or Ward; husband goes by Ted and father-in-law by Albert)
*= names I haven't thought through much, but rather fancy.
*edit*-- Just to let you all know, I'm not trying to be Eun33k-- Antalya, Sioneva, Feylin, and Taigan are just all literary names that I like.. probably too unusual for me to actually ever use.

Date: 2008-06-22 02:57 pm (UTC)i dont like prism, sorry.
i like lily grace
elisabeth (spelled this way) but not paired with catherine, its too much, imo
edith catrine is actually pretty cute, and i like the nn edie
i also like gemma (sort of), love violet, and jane too.
for boys, i like the name jonah, and love william with the nn will or liam, and edward is wonderful with both of them. albert is great also.
ETA: we have the red hair thing going on too, as i am a strawberry blonde, and the boys entire family is auburn haired, except his mother who is strawberry blonde also. ruby is my number one girls name, and i am having a hard time deciding if its ok or not. the redhead thing definitely plays into what names to use, doesnt it? its funny. i think violet is quite sweet on a redhaired girl, btw.

Date: 2008-06-22 03:49 pm (UTC)I prefer Elizabeth and am wondering what's too much about the pairing? I know it's kinda old-fashioned, and they're kind of the same taste of name. I haven't decided whether to use just one or both. My mother's name is Catherine Elizabeth, which is why I like the pairing, and my middle name is Catherine. That feeds into why I like Edith Catrine, also Eliza-- we pass on women's names in my family (my mother is named after her grandmothers combined and her sister is named after their mother.
I absolutely love Ruby, but I never list it because I don't think we'll use it. I've thought of pairing it with Prism, but that'd be weird(er). I've always thought it'd be a sweet nod to my father's family, though, as his mother and her sisters were all named for gemstones. I think using it on a redhead is fine. Ruby doesn't make me think of red hair, but more dark, warm spicy things, and ruby-color, and I don't think it'd be silly.
I still like Gemma, but we passed it over with our first daughter and will most likely not use it (like I said, they were in order of preference, and we're not going to have that many kids!).
I'm glad someone likes Edith Catrine! I think I've only met like 3 people who like it.
With our daughter I was hoping for a redhead, but not expecting one. When she turned out to have red hair, I felt silly for not expecting it. I'm the only redhead in my entire living family, including cousins and their kids, both sides, but my grandmother had red hair. My mother was surprised, but happy to have a redhead. With us though, I'm a redhead, my husband's sister is a redhead, and my husband has a lot of red in his beard and even his head hair has a reddish tint. I'm curious to see how our kids turn out, though-- I'm the kind of redhead with dark eyebrows and eyelashes while his sister has red eyebrows and lashes. We also both have brown eyes, but all our siblings and parents, except my dad, have bright blue, green, or hazel eyes.

Date: 2008-06-22 03:56 pm (UTC)thats a good question, yknow. i love both names - catherine and elisabeth, just together theyre really... long? thats seven syllables just for the first and middle! i like old fashioned names, so im not opposed to that. i think if i were to use catherine or elisabeth, i would pair them with something shorter, thats all. esme catherine, gemma elisabeth, you know? but thats just me.
best of luck!! :)

Date: 2008-06-22 04:22 pm (UTC)Your names are cute. We like Jonah because of my grandfather John (I know, different origin, but similar names). Ruby Colleen is pretty and Oliver is cute.
Lol, my name is Meredith Catherine, 6 syllables (or 4, depending on how you pronounce it)! My maiden and married names each are only one syllable, so I guess it balances out?
Our *secret* girl name is 3 syllables, I think it'll work nicely with a one-syllable middle name and last name.\
Thanks!

Date: 2008-06-22 03:05 pm (UTC)For girls, I like some and really hate others. I love Eliza, Alice, Lily, Rose, Elizabeth, Catherine, Violet, and Jane. I'm starting to like Esme. Prism, Taigan, and Feylin, are three of the worst names I've ever heard. The rest are NMS, or pretty bad but still better than those three. Stick with the nice, classic ones like Eliza, Alice, Violet, etc.

Date: 2008-06-22 03:26 pm (UTC)Lol, three of the worst? ;) Thanks. Aside from Prism we probably won't use the other weird (*) names-- they are literary names I've just taken a shine to.

Date: 2008-06-22 03:38 pm (UTC)but i think that one is a cute choice.
2. Lily is always a nice name.
Violet could be cool on a red-head, but i see it more as a child with dark hair and light eyes.
3. Prism... I don't know about that. It's an interesting name though.
4. Jane & Elizabeth are always top names for me.
5. I'm all about weird, fancy and unique names. But with ones like Antalya, Sioneva and Feylin, you make it seem like you're trying to hard to come up with unique names. Kind of like people who misspell a name so badly that it doesn't even look like the name anymore. Still, I really like that name Sioneva. And I also like Taigan.
As for your boys...
1. I like the last two - naming a child after someone is something big in my opinion. Albert Edward IV is a very, very strong name. I prefer the name Patrick over Anthony, but I think Anthony Patrick flows better.
2. Liam is a nice name. I'm not a fan of Uilliam, but it's still alright.
Sorry if this reply is just a jumbled thought process. :)

Date: 2008-06-22 03:49 pm (UTC)Prism Alice-- Prism is a major no from me, but I like Alice. (By the way, I don't think they go together, aside from the fact that I don't care for Prism.)
Eliza Grace - Flows very well, although Eliza is NMS.
Lily Grace - This seems a really common combo, so I wouldn't personally use it, but nice enough.
Lily Rose - See above, although the fact that Rose has meaning to you might make this better. Although I am not crazy about two flower names used together.
Elizabeth Catrine/catherine - I actually kind of like Catrine after having a girl in one of my classes with that name, but I much prefer Katherine (since it's my name, hee).
Edith Catrine - Edith sounds way too dated to me.
Gemma Grace - Not a fan, and looks like Emma Grace, which is probably the most common combo I've heard.
Violet* - Loooove.
Jane* - Love, but I think it works better as a middle.
Antalya* - Prn? I actually don't mind it.
Sioneva* - Ditto.
Feylin* - Not a fan.
Taigan* - I'm probably in the minority in this comm, but I like Taegan alright (though I prefer it spelled that way). I knew a really sweet girl with that name.
Boys
Jonah Edward - Doesn't flow well, IMO, but I love Jonah.
Uilliam Edward (nn Liam) - Definitely vote for "William" instead, but I love Liam and William Edward.
Liam Edward - Think it might be better as William Edward. Liam changes this name significantly to me and makes it not flow as well with "Edward" (although, again, Liam rocks).
Patrick Anthony/Anthony Patrick - Awww @ Paddy and Andy, and I like Patrick Anthony depending on your last name.
Albert Edward IV - I really dislike Albert, and I'm not a fan of recycling names of family members, so I don't like this one at all.
Suggestions:
Catrine Elaine
Taegan Jane
Violet Esme
Alice Juliet
Jonah Anthony (my favorite)
Jonah Isaac
Isaiah Patrick
Liam Andrew

Date: 2008-06-22 05:37 pm (UTC)So making sure the name you choose is good enough on its own, without justification or explanation, is certainly also a consideration (and in my eyes at least an equal one to personal sentiment/association).
For those reasons, I WOULDN'T be okay with naming a child Feylin, Sioneva, Taigan, Antalya, or Uilliam. Not that they're inherently ugly-sounding, but if you're only warming up to them because of literature or whatnot, think of the thousands of people who will interact with the name/person without the benefit of your personal experience.
In theory, I quite like the name Prism, especially on paper, but I'd never use it because it would INEVITABLY sound like "prison" over the phone and in quick introductions. The words sound very similar and the word "prison" has a significantly higher incidence in the English language.
So all your suggestions other than the above names get my vote.

Date: 2008-06-23 12:58 am (UTC)Like you, we will most likely have a red-headed baby. I have bright red hair..come from a long line of irish, etc. Hubby is a pale blonde, so hopefully the red hair will be dominant! Eliza was our top choice for weeks and weeks after finding out we were having a girl. We probably wont end up using it though. I can really see it on a little redhead though!!
I love Esme, Lily, Alice and Violet.
For the boys list...I really like Liam and Jonah.
