[identity profile] botica.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
Ok so I've decided to use a pen name for my writing, but as much as I love names and easily name my characters, I can't rename myself.

My first and last name are boring and common, so I'm looking for the exact opposite: uncommon, maybe quirky. The only thing I really like is for names to match and have a certain ring to them; other than that - guilty pleasure names are even fair game. I need a first and last lame, middle is fine too if the whole name sounds good together.

Thanks :]

Steele is a good last name, but Danielle already has it. ROFL.

I had a character named Jaquinita Steele. Because it's ridiculous, but you could call her Jack and then it was sort of cool.

I followed your link, and from various forms of my own name, received these suggestions:

Our Lady Bonbon
Star Noble
Spicy Pepper

Hmmm, interesting, and kinda fun!
I suggest for you
Star Goldridge (satunian-insspired last name)

Thanks for the vote. When I become a published author.... I'll let you know!
Any suggested titles for a book meant to be written by Spicy Pepper? ;)

I think Spicy Pepper would write bodice-ripper novels. You could do better, I'm sure. What about using an anagram of your name? You know... like how boring Tom Riddle becomes LORD VOLDEMORT!

I love a lot of Shakespearian character names as guilty pleasures. Names like Hermia, Portia, Viola, Perdita, Desdemona, Ophelia, Cressida... they are all a little over the top IMO. Can't think of any last names - other than one of my favorite madeup ones - Redridge (or, insert other color instead of red; black, white, blue, brown, green and gold all work IMO, not so much with yellow, purple or orange...)

I made my pen name pretty easy... Hawk Kanter. I have a last name that is hard to spell/pronounce, so I went simple.

That said... what kinda names do you like for a pen name? I know you said off the wall.. but anything inparticular you've thought about?

I'm pondering using a pen name if I ever get published, but I'm always torn about what to use, because I wanted it to be my name on the cover, but then I don't.

Have you thought of going with a variation of your own name? Or using family names instead? As much as it is loved, I have a difficult last name and am thinking about using my mother's maiden name... as for my first name, I'm considering a variation of it.

But then again, like you said, anything's fair game. What's your main genre? Maybe go with something that suits. I know if I went with the Spicy Pepper that's been mentioned, I'd want to be a romance novelist, because no one's going to take say, a hardcore supernatural writer seriously with a name like that.

(While still on the topic of pennames, I know of a writer who goes by Sydney Bauer - she writes mystery novels, I think - and she chose the name because she's a fan of 24 and Alias or something. The Sydney, though, could have something to do with the city...)

Like I said above, have you tried using an anagram? You would come up with a good last name and use the remaining to figure out your first name.
