[identity profile] hotmaildt.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
Hubby and I have been discussing Amelia for our baby coming in September, and since mentioning it to a few people...Ive learned people say it two different ways.

Ah-mee-lee-yah

and

Ah-meal-ya

Which is the correct way?

both are correct, i think it just depends on how fast you say it.

This is exactly what I was going to say.

This. I think they are the same... very VERY slight difference, only noticeable if you slow down your speech.

I say the former, but they're both legit.

Either. It's like William which can be will-ee-um or will-yum, depending on how lazy your mouth is.

And if it's even lazier, it's more like Wee-yum (very quickly).

lol. wee-yum? really?! that sounds like the product of a speech impediment.

I know. I hate how it sounds, but you hear it a lot. Maybe more so when it's the surname Williams, but it's basically the same thing).

Ah-MEEL-lee-ah

But if you say it fast, it sounds like Ah-MEEL-yah.

I say it the second way. I think the first one is actually more like Ah-meal-ee-uh? That's correct, too, it's just a difference in dialect.

Like everyone else said, either/they're the same.

It's the same as me calling myself "Mel-issa" but most people say "Muh-lissa," it's just lazier-sounding but not really incorrect.

yeah..there are a ton of names like this. i think it really just depends on your accent and the way you talk.
like a lot of people say PARE-iss, while i say PAHH-ris (the first syllable like the pa in "pat".

I have no idea what's "correct", but I say Ah-meal-ya.

Ah-mee-lee-yah sounds better to me.

Or rather, I think they sort of sound the same, but that's how I *think* of it when I say it.

i say it as: ah-meel-ee-uh..so i guess a combo of the first and second one?

The "y" sound in "yah" comes from saying "ee" and "ah" really close together. So really, the two pronunciations there are *exactly the same*, depending on how fast you say them.
