I love to hear stories behind names! For example, My cousin was named Julisa because her parents each liked Julie & Lisa.

As well my friend's last name is Fischer and for the longest time growing up, she thought 'fish' was spelled 'fisch'. :)

Anyone else have any interesting/amusing stories about names?

My great-uncle used to refer to my mom as "Mike" when she was growing up for some unknown reason. She doesn't know, either. But like, she'd always go up to his house after school and he'd be like, "How ya doin', Mike?" They were really close, so she named my older brother Michael.

My name is Melissa Elena. When I was 2 or 3, I had trouble pronouncing L's. Therefore, I would refer to myself as "Missa Yena," which my mother still calls me. I'm almost 20. Similarly, my uncle Jeffrey called himself "Dippy". (Duff Goldman of Charm City Cakes/Ace of Cakes is actually a Jeff also, but the pronunciation error "Duff" was his brother's, not his own.)

I know that's a little irrelevant, but the story behind my name is boring.
Melissa= song
Elena= paternal grandmother

Hm, well... I don't much like Joanne, but it's a nice tradition. Maybe you could use your mom's middle, is it better? Lol.

My mom's mom was Marguerite, if you like that any more. Johanna is def. an upgrade from Joanne though. MY thing is I think kids should have unique first names (as in unique to the family, not like Poppyseed-Muffin Moonbeam) and family names should be middles. Just my 2 cents.

Mine is kind of sad, sentimental, and sweet.

My mother's sister was murdered when my mother was 13. My mom decided she would name her first daughter after her sister and voila, turns out her first child (*waves*) was going to be a girl. She is all ready to name me after her sister but, in a very odd turn of events, I was actually born on the day of my mother's sister's murder. My mother was a bit weirded out (and also worried about the family being really weirded out) so she asked my Grandmother moments after I was born if it would still be alright to give me her sister's name considering the circumstances. My Grandmother gave her full approval and while there were a few bumpy spots with the name choice (my mom's brother called me "kid" for the first four years of my life because he could not handle calling me by his sister's name) I am very, very proud to carry on her name. :)

Yeah, it is. But I am glad that my mom decided to give me something so special; well beyond life, that is. ;D

Wow, that's a lot of emotion jam-packed into a name. But it's also a lovely gift for your grandmother.

Yes, when I have told the story to other people it gets wide-eyed "...Whoa..." reactions. :) And I am glad my mother did that for herself and for my grandmother. =)

Yeah, probably, haha, but moreso in the US than here in Oz, I think. I was always the only Kayla in school, and even today, people like to tell me their three-year-old niece is called Kayla and they'll have to tell them about how Aunty Jane met another Kayla. Funniest thing ever was the delivery driver at work that told me my name was 'different' and asked how to pronounce it. LOL.

I'm surprised my mom DIDN'T- that's her favorite soap. But ultimately my dad picked our names, my mom had name jurisdiction for sons... but then had 2 girls.

My mum originally had Stephanie picked out until someone she knew used it. Kayla apparently was one of those names 'you hear and they just stick'. I don't know how much say my dad had. Probably not a lot.

My great-great-aunt's name is Woodburn Leila. She goes by Leila, or Lee. To this day, I have no idea why her first name is Woodburn. I don't think anyone does. My grandma once told me that when she was born, they had to baptise her, and couldn't think of what to name her, but there was a stove nearby and its brand was 'Woodburn', so... But I honestly think she just made that up.

I'm named after both my grandmothers.

My maternal grandmother's name (first and middle) was Julia Ann. She had died before I was born, and my mother wanted to name me after her. Mom had honestly never heard of another Julianne before that point, so she kind of just smooshed the two names into one and voila! Mom says she thinks that if her mother was still alive when I was born, she would never have let Mom name me after her - I guess she was a bit embarrassed about it, just like my mom is - she said I can't name any of my kids after her in any way. I say 'We'll see' :)

My paternal grandmother's name was Sarah Lily. And my middle name is Sarah. So, yeah. :) Named after both my Nan's :)

My grandma is the youngest of seven kids, and her oldest brother, Jack, was 17 years older than her. My great-grandparents had intended to name her either Lee Anne or Anne Lee, but Jack didn't like it. The insurance man came around a few days after she was born to get the information about her, and Jack was watching the other kids. The insurance man asked what her name was, and he said Janice Kay, so that is what she is named.

Her siblings, for the record, are/were (in order) John Thomas (Jack), Elizabeth Althea (Betty) , Mildred Louise, Marilyn Ida, Richard Dean (Dick), and William George (Bill).

When my mom was two years old, my grandmother had a miscarriage. She wanted a girl and to name her Amy Marie. She kept it as the girl name for her next two children, but had two sons. My mom and her sisters decided whoever had the first daughter would name her Amy Marie, so my grandma would still have the name around. But when the first one had a daughter, her husband was a Cheap Trick fan and the baby HAD to be named after Robin Zander, so her name wound up being Robyn Ann. When my mom's other sister had a daughter, her husband was German so they used a German name, so she is Katrina Elisabeth. Finally my mom was pregnant with me, and decided to finally use the name. My dad decided he wanted a more unique spelling, so I am Aimee Marie.

I was named Meghan after the character Meggie from Thornbirds (which is sad, but my parents liked that name). I get called Meggie a lot at home. My middle name (Marie) is an homage to my three aunts--all of whom are named Mary.

Funny, I was almost named Justine after Meggie's daughter in The Thornbirds! I have a cousin Justin, however, and the similarity between the names prompted my mum to settle with Lauren.

My mother wanted to name me Danielle after my dad, Danny (not Daniel!). As her due date came closer, she became overwhelmed with the fear that people would call me Little Danny, so she needed something different. While watching "Who's the Boss?" one day, it came to her- Alyssa Danielle.

She was blackballed by the family! The reason- no one could say it! My mamaw started calling me Lissie, which has stuck. My younger sisters, for whom Alyssa was a mouthful when learning to talk, called me Issa, then Lissa. My sister Whitney had a speech impediment and called me Wiffa. My family (I'm talking cousins and such) can now say my name (for the most part) but very few can spell it.....

My friend is Fionna, and she said that her mother found one baby book once, where it was spelled with the two n's. And she decided that she'd keep the book, just to prove that she just didn't make it up.

She can't find that book anymore, haha. And Fionna thinks that her mom just added the extra n so that she'd always have to correct people.

I went to see a psychic in 2005 and the psychic kept talking about my angels, so I asked who were my angels. I was expecting her to tell me who they were in relation to me, but she just said, "Their names are Rochelle and Christopher." Well, a few months later, I was working at a Dairy Queen, when a customer came and ordered and handed me her credit card. Being the name geek I am, I had to check the name and her name was Rochelle. I didn't think much of it, but when the next person to hand me their credit card was named Christopher, I thought, "wow, that is freaking weird...."

I thought of another thing. When my family was thinking of names for our dog, I mentioned Candy (I was 10, so I had no taste at the time ;-) ) but my dad vetoed it because it was too close to my sister's nickname (Mandee). Well, we finally chose the name Lucy and we call her Luc (pron. Loose) a lot. The problem is my dad in particular is constantly mixing up my name with the dog's name. He'll say to me, "you can take Lys along, I mean Luc." (Lys is my nickname).

My parents decided upon my name after watching movie credits for ideas.

When we found out we were pregnant, we debated names for a long time. I wanted to use my great-grandmother's name, Nora. My husband wanted to use his grandmother's name, Evelyn. Then we learned that we were having twins and were able to use both names.

We almost used the name Katherine. My husband's cousin Katherine, also a friend of mine, was murdered in October. We decided that things were still too raw for the whole family and it was too much of a burden to place on a child. We also decided against it in the event that her siblings want it.
