I only like Madeline & Chloe. I prefer Madeleine though.
The others are quite bland and dated.

our tastes vary a lot, and he vetoed a lot of the more 'unique' names I liked - like Bronwen, for example. I was actually surprised he left a few of the ones he did, although they only got question marks anyway.

I just got this suggestion in the pregnant community, too :)

although, if I was going that way, I would probably change the spelling of Madeline to Madilynn or something similiar, to include the Lynn from my mother's family (my parents are split, and I have both sides to deal with) and to honour my sister, whose name is Sherilynn.

Plus, I was unsure about how Madeline Josephine looked, because they share the same ending (and yes, I know I'm being ridiculous right now) but that issue would be eliminated by altering the spelling to Madilynn.

Why do you feel like you have to honour so many people? Family are important, of course.. but don't you think they should have their own name?

If it's most important to honour your Mum & Sister then I think you should choose an alternative first name and use Lynn as the middle.

I don't think it would be botching it at all. Generally, I'm against people getting "creative" with spelling just for the hell of it, but in this case, I think it's for a valid reason. I do believe that the baby should have its own first name - which I why I've eliminated a lot of first names right off the bat, because I don't want them to have the same name as someone else in the family.

But for me to simply "choose" who to honour between my mom's family and my dad's family would be impossible. They've both hugely impacted my life in very different ways; I'm not doing it to keep them happy, but because I wouldn't feel right about it otherwise.

I don't really understand this need to honour the family. I'm sure they know how much you love them without having to show them like this..
It would get a bit personal if I tried to do that.. My maternal Grandmother wanting to know why she wasn't honoured when my Aunt & paternal Grandmother was etc..

There are plenty of names I love that have nothing to do with honouring the family, but like I said, it's a priority for me (and my fiance as well) to show respect to our families through the baby's middle name. I'm not all that miffed that you don't agree with me on that point, because I wouldn't expect a lot of people to see it from my perspective, but at the same time, I find it a little ridiculous that you seem to be really put off by anyone who does not share your exact view on naming.

So, I appreciate your suggestions, but I would really rather not have to debate my decisions with a total stranger. I asked for peoples' opinions, and you have every right to give yours, but I don't feel that you have the right to question my motives.

I completely agree with this! "Creative" spellings are not actually creative; they remain derivative with the added drawback of being confusing or difficult to spell or pronounce correctly, which I have seen result in extremely embarrassing, or at the very least exasperating, situations, for the children involved.

as I mentioned in my reply to the above comment, it's not a matter of *having* to honour so many people; it's a matter of wanting to. And while I know it would be a lot less complicated if we only had two families to factor in - mine & Jeff's - my family is divided, and has been since before I can remember. Before I was born, actually.

So, although I know neither of my families would throw a fit or take offense if they weren't reflected through the baby's name, it's something that I feel is extremely important.

Sure. Like I said (or - maybe I didn't. But I meant to) I can use all the help I can get. Jeff's especially pig-headed when it comes to names ;) So, I basically picked names I liked (although wasn't necessarily in LOVE with - I was trying to keep all the bearable options open... lol) and the names he nixed were:

Olivia, Isabelle, Isolde, Abbigail, Chelsea, Ingrid, Gabrielle, Deanna, Ainsley, Imogen, Tegan, Bronwen, Gwyneth, Brianne

Of those, the only one I was really upset about him getting rid of was Bronwen, although there were a couple others I really liked as well.

I have to say I'm relieved he vetoed Isolde, Tegan, Bronwen, and Brianne, as I strongly dislike those name for a variety of reasons.

I'm not crazy about Deanna or Ainsley, either, but I think all your other names are wonderful possibilities, although I do prefer Abigail. Maybe he'll warm up to some of them again; I'm especially hoping for Olivia, Ingrid, and Imogen.

I love the name Bernice! I don't think it's used nearly often enough, so I hope you'll consider it as a first name. I also think Claire is a lovely, too-little-used name.

I do think Allison Bernice sounds lovely together, though, if you must Bernice as a middle name.

I strongly dislike Kailey and hope y'all won't use such a childish-sounding name.
