Once again I'm stuck on middle names, and could really use some help. We want the baby to have two middle names, one from each family. Last name is LaPointe.
Sibsets aren't a huge concern for me, but for what it's worth, our first son will either be Ryan John Frederick or Ryan Frederick John (probably the first.)
I spent a fair amount of time compiling girls' names yesterday after Jeff said he was second-guessing Claire. He then went through my list and crossed off the ones he didn't like (there were a lot, which I expected) and left:
Ones with ?'s are names he didn't dislike, but didn't know if he liked, either. Kailey got two checkmarks, which I assume means he loves it. (I'm still debating on whether or not I'm sold on it.) I like all the names, but I definitely prefer some over others - still, I don't want to tell you which ones, because I might fall in love with a specific combo.
Go nuts :)

Date: 2008-05-27 06:02 pm (UTC)The others are quite bland and dated.
Madeline Josephine Claire ♥

Sounds sophisticated and French!

Date: 2008-05-27 06:10 pm (UTC)and I know what you mean about some of the names being bland or dated. that's why I'm on the hunt for a really killer combo. :)
our tastes vary a lot, and he vetoed a lot of the more 'unique' names I liked - like Bronwen, for example. I was actually surprised he left a few of the ones he did, although they only got question marks anyway.

Date: 2008-05-27 06:30 pm (UTC)although, if I was going that way, I would probably change the spelling of Madeline to Madilynn or something similiar, to include the Lynn from my mother's family (my parents are split, and I have both sides to deal with) and to honour my sister, whose name is Sherilynn.
Plus, I was unsure about how Madeline Josephine looked, because they share the same ending (and yes, I know I'm being ridiculous right now) but that issue would be eliminated by altering the spelling to Madilynn.

Date: 2008-05-27 06:36 pm (UTC)Madilynn is really rather ugly.. you'd be botching a lovely classy name.
Why do you feel like you have to honour so many people? Family are important, of course.. but don't you think they should have their own name?
If it's most important to honour your Mum & Sister then I think you should choose an alternative first name and use Lynn as the middle.

Date: 2008-05-27 06:41 pm (UTC)But for me to simply "choose" who to honour between my mom's family and my dad's family would be impossible. They've both hugely impacted my life in very different ways; I'm not doing it to keep them happy, but because I wouldn't feel right about it otherwise.

Date: 2008-05-27 06:51 pm (UTC)Are there no names that you are in love with that have nothing to do with your family?
I don't really understand this need to honour the family. I'm sure they know how much you love them without having to show them like this..
It would get a bit personal if I tried to do that.. My maternal Grandmother wanting to know why she wasn't honoured when my Aunt & paternal Grandmother was etc..

Date: 2008-05-27 06:58 pm (UTC)So, I appreciate your suggestions, but I would really rather not have to debate my decisions with a total stranger. I asked for peoples' opinions, and you have every right to give yours, but I don't feel that you have the right to question my motives.

Date: 2008-05-27 07:16 pm (UTC)This. When people see the name, they don't think, "Hey, I bet the name 'Lynn' runs in the family!" they think, "Wow, her parents were dumbasses."

Date: 2008-05-27 07:57 pm (UTC)I completely agree with this! "Creative" spellings are not actually creative; they remain derivative with the added drawback of being confusing or difficult to spell or pronounce correctly, which I have seen result in extremely embarrassing, or at the very least exasperating, situations, for the children involved.

Date: 2008-05-27 06:43 pm (UTC)I dont mind madilynn. then again, I dont like the name and would never use it so I really don't care either way :P

Date: 2008-05-27 06:47 pm (UTC)So, although I know neither of my families would throw a fit or take offense if they weren't reflected through the baby's name, it's something that I feel is extremely important.

Date: 2008-05-27 06:50 pm (UTC)Do you mind if I do some digging? Perhaps finding names that have the same/similar meaning or different spellings?
Any chance I could see your list before your boyfriend dwindled it down? I wont if he see's a really nice combo if he'd change his mind.
Btw, I LOVE claire.

Of those, the only one I was really upset about him getting rid of was Bronwen, although there were a couple others I really liked as well.

Date: 2008-05-27 07:53 pm (UTC)I'm not crazy about Deanna or Ainsley, either, but I think all your other names are wonderful possibilities, although I do prefer Abigail. Maybe he'll warm up to some of them again; I'm especially hoping for Olivia, Ingrid, and Imogen.

Madeline
Kirsten
Allison
Hailey, Kailey, Kelsey, Chloe, Avery, Morgan, and Paige all seem really childish and dated. I mean, they seemed to be popular on young girls in the 90s, and not only is it almost impossible for me to see them on an adult, they just seem so . . . blah. The other four are gorgeous, though, and sound awesome with Ryan.
Claire Sydney Danielle
Allison Josephine Blanche
Madeline Sydney Danielle

Date: 2008-05-27 07:34 pm (UTC)My favourite combo out of the lists is: Avery Edith Danielle Lapointe.
The only name I think that works with Edith is Danielle and I really like Edith.
Other mn combos I can think of:
Margaret Lynn
Josephine Blanche
Rita Danielle
Margaret Lea

Date: 2008-05-27 07:49 pm (UTC)I do think Allison Bernice sounds lovely together, though, if you must Bernice as a middle name.
I strongly dislike Kailey and hope y'all won't use such a childish-sounding name.
Other combinations of your various names I like are:
Kelsey Danielle
Josephine Blanche
Margaret Paige
Linda Madeline
