What do you think of Cannon/Canon?

We agreed that the middle names will be James Allan (just couldn't get him to drop the Allan but at least I got my grandfather's name in there). So now, I am stuck deciding if I really like Cannon or not.

I am looking for reasons on not liking/liking the name instead of just saying "don't like it/like it".

I don't like it because:

- Canon the jetset printer
- Cannon Ball [kids will have a heyday with that]

I don't like either because both canon and cannon are actual words that don't make sense as names.

Canon: a set of texts/authoritative collection (e.g. the canon of books of the Bible; or "canon" of, say, a TV series that's official, as opposed to fan fiction etc.) Canon can also mean a church law.

A canon is also be a type of clergyman or minister/priest. So calling someone Canon James ____ sounds like, say... Father James ____ or Pastor James _____!

Then, of course, there's cannon:

Enough reasons for you?

Also, what's wrong with just James Allan? I think that would be a great name.

Oh... boo! Well, keep trying for a name that doesn't mean a weapon, a reverend or a set of books :)

Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy and birth!

I don't particularly like either of them- Cannon just makes me think of war (lol), and Canon makes me think of the musical term canon. Good luck, though!

I love Cannon. I think it's sturdy sounding. Nice. I don't think he'd get made fun of.

He would. If I can be called "Claire the Bear who has no hair"... Cannon can be teased too.

Cannon/Canon just means too many things. I can imagine all the little kids giggling at him when they're getting a history lesson, or when the commercial for the Canon printer comes on.

Can you get him to list some other names he likes?

Cannon/Canon just really doesn't seem like a good idea. Using a word as a name, I think, is always tricky and this just isn't a good choice. People are going to hear that and think of the weapon, or the printer or canon law.

Cain I personally would also stay away from, considering that Cain's role in the Bible is that of the first murderer. I mean, everyone might not make the connection, but I know that I learned the story of Cain and Abel in religion class and I'm sure some kids your son comes in contact with will know it too.

Gabriel, on the other hand, is a lovely name that I am extremely fond of. Go with that. :D

Gabriel is on my list.
The biblical association with Cain would not make me happy. He killed his brother.

Cannon - large gun that is intended to murder people
Canon - very common and popular brand name of camera equipment and other technology

I do like the sound of the word, but I think the associations are very strong, and not that positive.

I don't like Cannon/Canon for the reasons everyone else has mentioned. I also *really* hate it with Allan ANYWHERE in the middle name. Even with James in between Cannon and Allan, it still sounds bad.

Not a big fan. I don't like the connotations of either spelling. The associations with the word aren't pleasant for me, for either spelling. Wouldn't want to name my kid after something that kills people (or alternatively, the traditional set of great literature, which is a load of patriarchal horseshit).

Good luck and mega congrats. Wish I was in your shoes.

don't really like it. the name reminds me of two things. Canon cameras (etc) and canon law, catholic law. If you aren't catholic then I think it might be awkward, but if you are, I think it would still be awkward. Just my .02 :)

Howsabout Canaan? (Pronounced Cain-ann). It's kinda like Cain, kinda like Cannon....I used to babysit the cutest little boy by that name.

To me Canon is a historical weapon and I couldn't really understand why your hubby thought it was a good idea to start with. To someone who loves history, canon is a very strange name.

I don't like it because there is
a Cannon County in Tennesse, which
NO CHILD should be named after. Seriously.

Cannon is a fairly popular last name where I'm from. I guess I'm against the giving your child a last name that isn't your actual last name. If your maiden name had been Cannon I'd say go for it. But if it isn't then it seems kind of cheap and meaningless as a name. Like Blaine or Cooper on a soap opera.

There's a boy named Cannon in my son's 4k class, we make fun of him and his mother for it every chance we get. It's not a name to me, I don't think it's a good idea to name your kid after a war machine/printer.
