hi,

i love this one Romanian name (i am Romanian)...

Mircea.

here's the problem.. although i like the way it's spelled, it's pronounced 'Meer-cha,' which is the part of the name i value more.

so i'm curious for suggestions on how to i suppose 'Anglicise' the spelling of the name to reflect the pronunciation. because as it would look like now, he'd be called 'Mercy-a' for the rest of his life (if i were to name a child this). i tried a little, but they all looked too bizarre and made-up, too 'yunikk' if you know what i mean. ;)

anyway, thanks!

hmm. miercha, meercha, merecha... yeah those all look kind of made up. i really like how mircea looks, but like you said, it will definitely be mispronounced.

haha i understand. i posted a couple days ago about the name kenyon, and i'm not really considering it (i'm not pregnant anyway), i just wanted to see what people though, etc.

although 'mercy-a' isn't a horrible pronounciation! i kinda like it, actually, it just... isn't the name lmao.

haha! you're right, it isn't that bad... but... not the point! ;) hehe

I actually really like Mercia pronounced the way it's spelt. But anyway, you could try Mircha, it'll probably still confuse a few people but I reckon you could get away with it.

Or maybe Miercha.

Yeah, that's a hard name to anglicise without making it look totally weird. Meercha would be the speeling least likely to be mispronounced, but it doesn't look to good. I really like the name, though, and I love the original spelling. If only he wouldn't forever be correcting people.

Mircha or Mirsha? Those look similar to the russian name Sasha, so it's possible people will get it a little more than Mircea.

Hi. I think that if you're going to use a name from a different culture, you really should spell it the original way unless there is a set English version. Otherwise it's neither here nor there - sort of a Romanian name, but not really, and not an English name either... Keep the authentic spelling :) All the other (phonetic) versions look pretty weird anyway.

Maybe you could keep it as a middle name if you are concerned about mispronunciation? You could call him Mircea, but he could go by an easier first name if he wanted.
