it's one of the main female characters names on The L Word, and that's the first time i've heard it for a girl. i'd probably use it for a boy though

really? it's the name of one of my favorite characters from one of my favorite shows. that's where i first heard it and i think it's kind of grown on me! we'll see. i think i like it better for a boy anyway, because there are so many other cute girl names out there and i feel like boys names are harder to find.

yw. I remember a really old movie with a character in it named Shane. It's something I recall seeing as a kid. If memory serves, Shane was a handsome rugged cowboy. I think that set my association for that name to it strongly being male.

Shane is a beautiful boy's name. I don't believe that it should be used on a girl though. Shawna is ok for a girl though.

I don't like it at all. It must be some old association of mine, a person I used to know or something, but it feels like a low-class trailor park kind of name to me.

It also sounds a lot like the word "shame" and that turns me off further.

Definitely doesn't sound like a girl's name to me.

It's a boys name...
My sister is named "Shana" (pronounced Shay-na), it means "beautiful" ... if you want a girls name that's close, I'd say use that.

Shane is nice, and definitely better for a boy. There are other alternatives for a girl, such as Shanna, Shannon, etc.
