Names:

Fenno - a character in one of my favourite books
Sufjan - after one of my favourite musicians
Amelie - as the icon suggests, it's one of my favourite films

Opinions?

I am not fond of naming people after literary characters whose names did not exist before the author created them. (Wendy is an exception!)

Sufjan - use only if you have an ethic reason for doing so.

Amelie is fine. As is Amelia.

Heh... I completely agree about Wendy!

And Pamela, too. Although Pamela was invented so long ago that maybe it doesn't count as a fictional/literary name anymore...

I love Amelie! (Both the movie and the name). Fenno and Sufjan are um, well, unless you have a cultural connection they're a no-no.

Fenno-No thanks. If you just like how it sounds, there are other, similar real names.
Sufjan-Just too weird for me.
Amelie-Cute, but will probably be mispronounced a lot.

Well, Amelie is a pretty name (and I love that movie, too), but it's french. It has an "accent aigu" on the e, technically. It's pronounced "ah-may-LEE". But no one will say it right. Most people would probably say "Ah-mi-lee".

Fenno sounds too much like Fennel, as in cooking. But Finn or Finnley doesn't make me think that. hmm.
Sufjan... I am not sure. To me, it isn't an ethnic name, it's Sufjan. I am still having a hard time wrapping my mind around the fact that random people know who he is and are fans. So, its just weird :)
Amelie is nice!

Besides the ethnic problem, how important is Sufjan Stevens in your life? Has he influenced you in deep and important ways that merit naming a child after him? If not, it seems kind of frivolous. You might not be that into him in a few years, and I doubt he'll remain your favourite for the rest of your life.

A musician I know gave her son the middle name Amadeus, but she pretty much lives and breathes Mozart and probably will forever - that's different, I think...

Also, it's really not that nice, as a name...

Fenno - It doesn't really look like a name to me. It just seems like a little too much.
Sufjan - This one would be mispronounced all the time. I see people on music boards spelling it wrong a lot too. Like "Surfjan". ; ;
Amelie - I love this name. The only problem with it is that it's less cute when it's not pronounced with a french accent, (like so many other adorable french names!) but even when you say it with an american accent, it sounds cute.

The whole literary character thing I think is excellent. I have no problem with taking names from books. Caspian is my favorite boys' name as of right now.
I don't really care if Sufjan is "ethnic." If you like it, you like it.

I don't mind taking names from books or movies....I mean a lot of baby names are picked from baby name BOOKS. haha. I named my son after a character from a movie that I love so much and is pretty unique and not common at all where I live. My daughters name was taken from greek mythology books.
I like your unique names. I love Amalie and sufjan.

I hate the first two.

Amelie is a pretty name, but unless you are giving birth to a French baby and are going to use the name in its correct form (Amélie) then I have to say that I hate it, too. =/

How can you detest Amelia? it's beautiful *cries*
I couldnt decide on Amélie or Amelia.. chose Amelia because Amélie is so close to Emily & it might get a little confusing...
I dont know.. may change my mind when she arrives.
