[identity profile] chocolatee136.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
A friend of mine is due in August and she is deciding between two names for her little girl. I almost dropped the phone when I heard her choices, but please tell me if I am just overreacting or if I am justified in telling her that she is crazy to even suggest these names:

Memorie Rayne (pronounced Memory Rain)
Cairo Lillian (yes, like the city in Egypt)...I do like Lillian tho.

Memorie Rain is just about the tackiest thing ever - I could not agree more! I'd vote for Cairo Lillian if those are the only two choices.

However, just to contribute some more tackiness: my best friend has a manager who named her newborn daughter Justyce Candles.

It's because her daughter is "the light of [her] life," which if very sweet, but yeah... Candles.

The intent is cute. The name is awful. At least Mom will have some nice explanation if the kid complains about it later on.

What about Lillian Rayne or Lillian Cairo? Not the best names in the world, but a whole lot better than the current choices...

I second this. That sounds so much better.

Third! The only time place names are okay is when they have some meaning~ I would use Brooklyn because of my dad's birthplace or Georgia because of mine... but as pretty as Virginia may be, I'd never use it.

[I pressed enter too soon]

..or any place name, Cairo, Alexandria, etc. if it didn't have significance to me.

lol hey! i'm named Alexandria. for the ancient capital of Egypt. :(

i'm German/Irish/Spanish. lol. my dad was just a MAJOR history buff... he's travelled the world. So I got named after Ancient Egypt.... and my nn, Alix, after Russian/German history... (Alexandra Fyodorovna (Alix of Hesse)).

Alexandria is a nice 'normal'-ish name. and most ppl sadly don't make the connection to Egypt so much as the state of Virginia.

lol, i always felt like Juno did when ppl would go: "oh! Like Virginia!" and i'd respond: "No. Like Egypt."

Haha =)

I actually like Alexandria much better than, say, Alexandra.

I like Cairo as a name, but more so for a boy. It's not horrible though, and Lillian is nice.

Memorie Rayne is awful. Two word names both misspelled.... ick.

I think if a friend of my suggested either of these names I would just laugh in her face. Not to be mean, but because I would actually think she was joking!

I think Rain is fine, although a bit flower childish and I think it's idiotic to misspell the word, and Lillian is a lovely, classic name that the child can use if she is unfortunately given Cairo as a first name.

Has she been to Cairo? Is that where the baby was conceived? I was nearly given the name Mississippi, because I was conceived on a ship that was docked on the river, or so the story goes. Fortunately, my mother came to her senses and named me Jacqueline instead; otherwise I would have had to become a Blues singer.

Aw, but then you could've gone by Missy! What a surprise when people ask you what it is short for...

Jacqueline is nice. I don't hear that one very often.

Cairo Lillian, I think, is a perfectly decent name. Memorie Rayne, is not, the mispellings the least of the offenses.

Maybe you could just suggest Lillian Rayne to her. That sounds like the best, out of those.

This brings us back to that whole discussion about how to tell someone they are cursing their child. For which I still have no solution.
