May. 7th, 2008 04:30 pmA friend of mine is due in August and she is deciding between two names for her little girl. I almost dropped the phone when I heard her choices, but please tell me if I am just overreacting or if I am justified in telling her that she is crazy to even suggest these names:
Memorie Rayne (pronounced Memory Rain)
Cairo Lillian (yes, like the city in Egypt)...I do like Lillian tho.

Date: 2008-05-08 08:56 pm (UTC)i'm German/Irish/Spanish. lol. my dad was just a MAJOR history buff... he's travelled the world. So I got named after Ancient Egypt.... and my nn, Alix, after Russian/German history... (Alexandra Fyodorovna (Alix of Hesse)).
Alexandria is a nice 'normal'-ish name. and most ppl sadly don't make the connection to Egypt so much as the state of Virginia.
lol, i always felt like Juno did when ppl would go: "oh! Like Virginia!" and i'd respond: "No. Like Egypt."

Date: 2008-05-09 10:09 am (UTC)I actually like Alexandria much better than, say, Alexandra.

Date: 2008-05-07 10:51 pm (UTC)I think Rain is fine, although a bit flower childish and I think it's idiotic to misspell the word, and Lillian is a lovely, classic name that the child can use if she is unfortunately given Cairo as a first name.
Has she been to Cairo? Is that where the baby was conceived? I was nearly given the name Mississippi, because I was conceived on a ship that was docked on the river, or so the story goes. Fortunately, my mother came to her senses and named me Jacqueline instead; otherwise I would have had to become a Blues singer.
