Would you actually use the umlauts? I know a Swedish friend of mine had problems opening a bank account because the system would accept umlauts in the last name but not the first name. Makes zero sense to me why this would be set up like that, but it caused her months of annoyance.

I do prefer the umlauts, since they help indicate the correct pronunciation.

I would definitely use the umlaut -- it's part of what makes the name for me.

My first name is hyphenated but many accounts I have (baking and otherwise) are set up under my name with a space, or as one whole name, instead of the hyphen. I imagine an umlaut would be the same, if the system doesn't accept it, they would just leave it out? Who knows! Every system is different.

I've got an apostrophe in my first name..and it's the same way. If I ever enter it online or anywhere else - it says it isn't valid and it usually just gets left out.
