[identity profile] daydream11.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
A friend of my mom just had a baby girl... on April 17 (which I was happy about, as an Aries myself). Her name is Leila Sarah Louise.

I didn't like it at first, but it's grown on me and now I do. I love how they spelt Leila, too; it's how I would versus the popular Layla.

WDYT?

That's very cute, but I'll admit that the spelling 'Leila' to me is more LIE-luh, not LAY-luh..

Same, I was sad it wasn't Lie-luh, too.

Yeah, I prefer it LIE-luh. :O

most other cultures would pronounce "Leila" as "Layla". It's mostly a Germanic thing to want to make a long I sound. I studied romance languages so to me "Leila" is the better spelling, but my friend who speaks fluent German thinks "LIE-la" as well (to me that's just Lila)

Yeah, I'm also odd about the name Helena.

To me that is 'Hel-AYNE-uh' to most other people, it's 'Hel-EN-uh' but a lot more fluid syllables..

Ah, I think you're right, it should be hel-ayn-uh, though to me it's more like HEL-en-uh

I prefer Layla spelt Leila too. I'm not a huge fan, but it is really pretty.

I've always preferred Leila as well, never liked it spelled "Layla"

When I see Leila, I hear 'Lee-la'.
I had an aunt with that name/spelling, and it
was Lee-la.

Like Lilo, but with an a.

I also had - well, have - an aunt with that spelling, and that pronunciation.

Yay, it's good to know I'm not the only one!

Oh yeah, I'm from SE Georgia, so maybe that had/has
something to do with the pronounciation.

when i was a kid, one of my favorite girls names was leila, but it was pronounced lie-luh, and it looks (to me at least) like it should be pronounced that way. lay-luh makes no sense to me with that spelling. its a nice name all together though.

very nice name. :] I don't like the layla spelling at all, either laila or leila.

My mothers name is Leila. We pronounce it (Lee eye lah)
She's seventy so it wasn't a name that was common in rual new england back then. Also, one of my daughters is named Lilah. (Lie lah) I can't tell you how many times we have to correct people on how to pronounce them both, as well as a ton of other names in our families... but that's a story for another day. lol...
