[identity profile] miss--nikki.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
Hi I just found this community while I was looking for help with baby names. My friends are great, but sometimes you need more. I KNEW there had to be an LJ community for it, and I was right! (There's a community for everything!)

Anyway, here I am almost 3 months pregnant, plenty of time to decide, but love to think about it all the time so you could say I'm a little obessed with baby names. Always have been. 5 weeks and I find out what gender it is so for now I'm picking both, but hoping for a girl. (I shouldn't say that hehe)

Girl Names so far:
Avalyn
Madison
Johanna
Aurora (husband doesn't like that too much, but I love it)
Gwendolyn
Hazel
Sky
Taylor
(I'm sure there is more I love, but can't think of them atm)

Boys names:
Aidan or Ayden
Evan
Mason
Garrett
Grant
Trevor
Jason

So, those are some I'm thinking of. Any input is GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!!! Glad to meet all of you! :-)

Grrr!!!!! Every other post here is about Aidan/Ayden!!!! Make it stop!!!

Sorry. I'm not yelling at you in particular, but I had to get that off my chest... :) Not that it's a BAD name - I'm just SO tired of seeing it that I think I have developed some kind of grudge against it!!

Okay, now that that's over with....

I LOVE Hazel and Johanna.

Avalyn looks like Evelyn spelled wrong. Or like someone liked Ava but wanted to change it a bit. Don't like it at all. Why not just go with Evelyn, a pretty, classic name?

Madison is trendy... or, WAS trendy, what, about three years ago? It already sounds dated, and I've never understood its appeal.

I like the look and idea of Aurora, but hate the way it sounds - it's hard to say clearly. Rowrrrowrrr...

Taylor will forever be a last name to me.

Sky sounds like a stripper, and I can't imagine an adult professional woman with that name. If anything - a middle name if you're really set on it. (Evelyn Sky would work if you like those names.)

As for boys... None of your boys' names really appeal to me. Grant, maybe.

I used to agree that names should be versatile and able to sound professional as well, but recently realised that I know heaps of professional people with really babyish names, and am completely used to it. The name just goes with the person. I also know a young woman named Skye and once you learn that that is her name, you just associate the name "Skye" with her, and not with strippers or hippies or anything else you might think if you just heard the name on its own referring to nobody in particular.

So, I'd say Skye would be fine for someone of any age, especially considering that there are many more wacky names about in her generation and Skye won't sound too out there, amongst all her peers.

I actually know a Cherrie (pronounced like the fruit) and it's true, once you meet a real person with that name you tend not to stereotype it anymore (especially if they are not like the stereotype at all).

Avalyn makes me think of Toyota Avalon but it IS cute. And you could call her Ava for short. I like Madison but it's very popular right now, as is Aidan. Aurora is a mouthful. Love Gwendolyn, Hazel, and Taylor. I like Skye as a middle name. Like Evan, Mason, Garrett, and Trevor. Good boys names!

Just my 2 cents

I know someone who named their daughter Aurora Kathleen. Also, my psych professor's name was Aurora (she was Hispanic). The first time I ever heard it was when I met my professor.

Hazel is okay but it makes me think of my ex-fiance's grandmother *shudders* or nuts (hazelnuts, to be exact).

Gwendolyn and Johanna are cute :)

I think I would prefer Skye as opposed to Sky as well.

Taylor, Avalyn and Madison are okay but not my style. Nothing wrong with them though, they're cute names. I do prefer Evelyn or maybe Ava Lynn as opposed to Avalyn :)

I really like Mason but, alas, that is my hubby's brother's name, so we can't use it. (I also love Jacob but DH knows SIX people with that name!)

Aiden seems to be very popular but it's a cute name. Jason is also overused but it's an okay name.

Evan, Garrett, Grant and Trevor are nice! (I also love Zachary, Benjamin and Nathan/Nathaniel)

I love Johanna. Partly because I love Bob Dylan, and partly because it's just cute. Johanna Hazel would be pretty.

Boys, please don't name him Aidan! There will be like 10 others in his class. hahah. I love Evan and Grant.

Congrats on your baby and welcome to the community :)

I LOVE Avalyn!! I have never heard that before!!

Anyways, my opinions on your list:
Avalyn-love love love it, might steal it ;)
Madison-love it but I dont want to use popular names and it is really popular now
Johanna-I like it pronounced Joe-Hon-uh
Aurora (husband doesn't like that too much, but I love it)-I like it, it is very pretty, but it is kinda hard to say. I mean I can say it, but others may have a problem, to R-y
Gwendolyn-ehh...not really
Hazel-nope, don't like it
Sky-cute but I think nickname for Skylar
Taylor-love it, its on my list :)

Boys names:
Aidan or Ayden-close to my oldest sons name, Adrian, so I love them ;)
Evan-cute
Mason-not really a fan
Garrett-its okay
Grant-no
Trevor-love it, my hubby's name is Travis and I call him Trevor all the time, he hates it, lol
Jason-love it

Some of my faves are: Hailyn, Ashland, Bellani....and I'm about tapped out on boy names after two, lol. We are hoping for some girls now.

Good luck!!

Oh and is Avalyn pronounced Av-a-lyn, like the Av sounding like the A in apple?? Thats how I read it, just making sure I'm right.

Avalyn - -lyn names are somewhat annoyingly trendy. They will look dated in the years to come.
Madison - Way tired off it. Already dated, a very 90s name.
Johanna - Nms but fine
Aurora - Pretty
Gwendolyn - Ok
Hazel - Nms but fine
Sky - Nice
Taylor - Nms but fine

Aidan - Would be happy to never see it again. It's enormously popular.
Evan - Nice
Mason - Nice
Garrett - Ok, mostly I just don't like Gary.
Grant - Nms but fine.
Trevor - Ditto
Jason - Kind of dated, but I like it.

Girl Names so far:
Avalyn- Very pretty, but i prefer Ava i think.
Madison- Oh gosh so damn popular!
Johanna- Yuck hate it with a passion
Aurora- beauuutiful
Gwendolyn- This is really old fashioned to me.. it is quite romantic though.
Hazel- I dont like this, reminds me of cats. A lot of people likle it though
Sky- Lovely.. bit hippy but i like it.
Taylor- I prefer this on a boy.

Boys names:
Aidan or Ayden- No no no your baby will be one of a zillion other Aidans in his class but if you do decide to go with it, then dont use Ayden, its a really silly spelling!
Evan- This is such a cool name, i also like Euan.
Mason- Love it. It;s one of the only surname type first names i like
Garrett- Dislike.
Grant- Dislike
Trevor- Dislike
Jason- This name should have died in the 80's!

ooh, everyone talking about how Avalyn reminds them of Avalon reminded me of a name that I tried to convince my husband to like, but he vetoed right away :(
anyway, what do you think of it since you like Ava but think it is too trendy? Avonlea (av-on-'lee with a short 'a' and the accent on the last syllable) like in Anne of Green Gables.

Sounds a bit like the word "Heavenly"
I think it sounds like a place name, somehow I think human names should roll off the tongue more easily that place names, perhaps I'm pronouncing it wrong.. I'm thinking "AV-un-lee". How were you thinking of pronouncing it?
