Apr. 20th, 2008 06:09 amWe're TTC very soon, so we've been talking about names! Gi.rls names are in order of like, boys names are in no order.
Our choices for boys:
The first name is my fiance's name; all the others, save Jonah, are men's names from my side of the family. I like Jonah since it's kinda close to John, which is a family name. I'd like to be more creative with boy's names, but we've just been gravitating towards family names-- Jonah is about the most creative we've gotten.
Albert Edward Lastname IV -- go by Edward or nn Ward My fiance goes by Ted and his father goes by Albert
Jonah Edward
Patrick Anthony/Anthony Patrick
Our choices for girls; we're pretty set on our next girl's name, but are keeping the first name secret online at least until we find out we're having a girl and in RL until the birth. We might keep our boy's name secret in RL too, but we have trouble keeping secrets. I can't believe we've kept our girl's name under wraps for so long. I guess it's silly to be so secretive, but the name we love is really unusual-- I've never seen it on eljay and also names we say we like keep popping up on his sister's list.
Secretname Esme We love this mn so much we might use it as a first name for another child instead.
Prism Alice This name started as a joke, but I really like it and my fiance absolutely loves it.
Norah
Eliza Grace
Elizabeth
Catherine-- nn Kitty
Mary Jane
Others we considered for our first daghter, but aren't really in to anymore.
Lily Grace
Edith Catrine
Our eldest daughter's name was Brenna Rose Sherman Lastname
Which do you guys like? How about sibsets?
Do any of you plan on using your guilty pleasure name?
I just love the name Eulalia-- probably not going to use it, but I might be able to squeeze it in a a middle name if we have three more girls (next two girls names are fairly set). WDYT?

Date: 2008-04-20 07:00 pm (UTC)Esmé has never been in the top 1000.

Date: 2008-04-21 06:39 am (UTC)If it's not in the top 1000, you really can't call it culturally trendy.
I guess it's on trend with the old-sounding-names revivial but as it's own name, not at all.

Date: 2008-04-21 12:40 pm (UTC)The fact I know this makes me realise I know far too much about name statistics (!) but Amanda has never had the number 1 spot (assuming you're American here.)
I wouldn't it a trend either.. it's had a steady rise and decline. I'd just call it popular and dated to the late 80's.
The way I see it, a trend has to make an impact. Names that aren't on the top 1000 mean that less than 255 babies born in 2007 (for instance) across the whole of the states were given that name.
Maybe you're right and it will become a trend, but there's no evidence of that at the moment.

Date: 2008-04-22 02:13 am (UTC)And generally when someone is saying a name is trendy, it is very popular, not just popular in a small group of people. For a name to be classified trendy, I would think it would have to have wide-spread usage.
You're just solidifying her argument by using her own argument against her. She's saying that just because you know a bunch of Esmes doesn't mean it's popular just as just because you don't know any Amandas or Neveahs doesn't mean the name isn't popular. By this logic, your statement that just because you know a lot of Emes it is therefor trendy/popular, is fallible.
You may be right and the name could be on the rise, but as of right now, it's not even in the top 1000. There is somewhat of a trickle down effect with names and if you look at the top 1000 back over the last few decades, a name's popularity tends to build up over time-- it generally doesn't just jump into the top 100s without ever being seen in the top 1000s.

Date: 2008-04-20 07:15 pm (UTC)For girls, I love love love Eliza, Catherine, Elizabeth, and Norah. I'm not a fan of Esme at all, but depending on what the secret first name is, I think it could work. The only ones I don't like are Prism (it's too out there and weird, but I do love Alice), and Kitty as a nickname. Mary Jane is nice, but I always think of marijuana when I see the name, so I'd advise against that one. What about Alice as a first name?
For sib-sets, I'd go with any combination of Jonah, Eliza, Patrick, Alice, and Catherine. If you go with Albert Edward, I'd use Catherine or Elizabeth, because they seem to work the best with the old fashionedness of the name (and I mean that in a good way). I'd just go with Cate as the nickname instead of Kitty. Or use Katherine and go with Kit. I like Kit, but Kitty is just . . . ugh.
I have a lot of guilty pleasure names, but I probably won't ever use them. I love the name Codi on a girl, but I'd never use it except as a nickname for something else. The only thing I think of is Cordelia, which I really don't like that much. As for boys, I love Thatcher and Sawyer, but they don't really fit well with my usually very classic and sophisticated style of names. Oh, and I love love love Harriet, but everyone (with the exception of a few select people) think it's awful, so I probably wouldn't ever use it.
