I think the difference with most of these is that those aren't nicknames that people would go by in every day life -- examples being Mike for Michael, or Matt for Matthew. Those are things that your name is going to be shortened to in a hurry, like, "Hey Rube, can you hand me the pencil?" But you'd still be Ruby about 99.9% of the time.

I definitely agree about Mae, though.

Ya, I see what you mean. The only ones I can see having everyday nicknames are possibly Maeve-Mae and Jade-Jadey.

I know lots of Claire/Clare's and they all go by nicknames (Clairey, Clarebear)

I know lots that go by Clairebear, too.

those aren't nicknames that Claire's go by all the time. I'm a Claire and I've been called both of those but they aren't on the same level as Mike to Michael, you know?

Yeah but putting it in a list of names that have no nicknames still doesn't make sense because there are nicknames, no matter of the frequency.

Claire isn't like Skye (also on the list) that you can actually do nothing with. I'm not sure if the original list differentiated the difference between Michael/Mike and Claire/Clairey but the original post didn't.

You could do a gazillion things with Skye. Skyblue. Skyeskye. Skybird. Skyes. Flyskye. Skye is just a less common name so you don't hear any of those as much as Clairebear, but bear is just something that rhymes with Claire, and that kind of nickname formulation can work with pretty much any name.

I was referring to Clairey not Clairebear. You cannot make Skye any longer or shorter. Yes you can make things rhyme with it but you can do that with any name.

There are very few names that someone could put on a list that are truly unnicknameable.

I agree...which is why I think that this list is referring to real nicknames not just pet names or made up nicknames. My name is Claire and it is my firm opinion that it is a non-nickname-able name. Yes my father sometimes calls me Claire-bear or Princess, but to me those don't count because they aren't formed from the root of my name, and I've never once in my life been called Clairey nor known another Claire who has been.
But I think we agree on the essentials :).

I like Ava and Paige the best. I would say I like Ana too, which I do. But then again, Ana makes me think of Kiana, but that's just me.

Lol, as someone from Australia (and Australians have a horrible habbit of making a lovely name into a terrible sounding nick name), I reckon I could make a nickname out of almost every single one of those names.

My parents purposely picked out their children's names so that there would be no nicknames. They wanted their children to go by the names they gave them.

Our names are:

Gretchen
Leah
Aaron

we have little shortened names that we use like Lee, Aar, Gretch, but none of these are used on a daily basis and are not names that we would write as our names or tell others to use like Matt, Joe, Kate, Ally, etc.

Ruby is one of my favourite names, so I love it. I'm also a little bit of a fan of Nora, Piper and Bree.

The thing is, scrolling through this list I found possible nicknames for almost every name.

Annie, Ave, Blair-bear, Breezy, Clairie, Mae, Nor, Nory, Pi, Ru, etc.

I say go with whatever name you like even if there is a nickname and just don't use a nickname, ever. If someone uses one, you tell your kid that their name is Alexander or Catherine, not Sandy or Cathy. It didn't work in my family (I'm a Catherine who is a Cathy) but that's because my mom didn't stick to her guns.

And remember that nicknames are usually a sign of a child's acceptance by his peers. :)
