[identity profile] ouronlylight.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
Actress Elisabeth Röhm (Law & Order) welcomed her first child, a daughter, yesterday. As I reported in November, she and her fiancé decided to name their daughter Easton. I was rather appalled, but then I read the child's full name on People.com:

Easton August Anthony

And no, Anthony is not her surname; it's her middle name. I can't find words at the moment. There just are none. Ugh.

Took me a few reads to get that the baby was a girl. Three boys names do not = a girl's name! Gosh!

Also, these names are so odd together! Guess they were really vowel happy.

Actually, Easton is not a boy's name, it is a unisex name. I don't think "August" is *such* an awful name; it's unusual, to be sure, but it's no more unusual/awful than some of the names that get posted here.

As for Anthony...well, yes, that is a male name, but...eh. I had a friend in high school (female) whose middle name was Anthony -- it was in honour of her father who died two months before she was born.

Whether or not it is unisex, I don't like Easton for a girl. Or a for a boy now that I think about it. August is a very nice name, I like it a lot and think it might make a pretty girl's name, but overall I think it is viewed as a male name. I don't mind girl's having male middle names or vice versa, if they honoring a friend or family member. I have a guy friend whose middle name is Rose - it is his mother's maiden name. It flows really well with his first and middle name too.

I agree this name is not the WORST name I've ever seen on this site by far, but I would also argue that it is not a very good name either.

Eh. *shrug* I guess I just don't care one way or the other what someone else names their kid. :) As long as they're happy with it, that's all that matters. I'm sure they don't care about our opinions!

I am sure they don't care one bit, and if I ran into them I wouldn't say a thing. But seeing as this is a baby name discussion blog I decided to chime in.

I never said I thought unisex names were a good idea. I was simply pointing out that "Easton" is not solely a boys' name.

What does that have to do with anything? According to babynames.com, it's never been on the SSA list for boys, either.

So what's your point?

All right, fine, I concede. Easton & August are both "male" names. I don't care that someone I've never met and never will have chosen to give those names to their daughter, but that's fine. It's certainly not the first (and probably not the last) time that someone has given a girl boys' names.

As for Anthony, "Anthony" is actually the baby's surname, from what I gather.
