Like so many others, I am not pregnant or planning on have kids for awhile, but I'm obsessed with names, and have been since as long as I can remember. Here is a list of the names I like (most favorite on top)- just wondering what you think. Also, if your mother had named your sisters "Noelle" and "Juliet" and then named you "Matilda" or "Agnes" would you feel... I dunno, cheated, like your name was too simple or dumpy sounding? :o) Also, these are for both first and/or middle names.

Alton and Nell are real names...

Alton Brown has a show called Good Eats on the Food Network and Nell Carter was an actress on the show Gimme a Break. ;)

Aren't all names made up though, really? All of these names can be found on a baby name site with maybe the exception of Viene (which I mistook for the name of the main character from Chocolat, who's name was actually Vianne. But I ended up liking Viene a lot). Risto is the Finnish version of Christopher (I'm Finnish), Orenda is Native American, Linne was my great-great grandmother's name; and not that a name is only real until someone famous is named that but some famous people are: Doran Ingram, Doran Ray, Doran Cart, Arlo Ramathorn (the character in Super Troopers), Arlo Guthrie, Alida Valli (Italian), Alton Taylor (composer), Nell (from the movie Nell), and (ok ok) Naiya is a water nymph, used often in mythology and Shakespeare. Also known as Naiads.

Just because names like Sarah, Mary, Lucy, James, Carl, Mark and whatever else is more popular doesn't make it less "made-up." Someone, at some time, came up with the name.
