Like so many others, I am not pregnant or planning on have kids for awhile, but I'm obsessed with names, and have been since as long as I can remember. Here is a list of the names I like (most favorite on top)- just wondering what you think. Also, if your mother had named your sisters "Noelle" and "Juliet" and then named you "Matilda" or "Agnes" would you feel... I dunno, cheated, like your name was too simple or dumpy sounding? :o) Also, these are for both first and/or middle names.

Date: 2006-01-12 10:50 pm (UTC)Maddock--sounds incomplete, like a typo of Maddox
Peter--like it but he'll get called Pete and I hate that
Arlo--sounds like a dog's name for some reason
Koi--makes me think of koi fish or Coy :/
Agnes/Agatha--like the second MUCH better. Agnes just sounds ugly to me
Evangelina--I will always think of evangelists, who I despise, and I'm sure I won't be the only one
Valentine--I'm sure you can predict the problems that will arise here
Linne--I prefer Lynn or Lynne but that's actually sort of cute the way it is
Orenda--makes me think "horrendous"
Nell--people will say Nellie for a kid and then there will be jokes about it since that's a nickname for a girl's parts, at least in the US
the rest I LOVE. So I love a lot more than I hate. :) I might even nab a few for my own list.
btw I don't think Matilda is a plain name, I think it's just as good as Julilet or Noelle.

Date: 2006-01-12 11:27 pm (UTC)I actually got this from Much Ado About Nothing, though it's a girl named Hero. Think he'd feel he had to live up to that expectation?
Arlo--sounds like a dog's name for some reason
I got it from Super Troopers :o) Ramathorn's son is named Arlo, I thought it was so cute.
Agnes/Agatha- I would love to call her Aggie. So it really doesn't matter to me which one her "real" name was, I'd call her Aggie all the time. Got this from The Crimson Petal and the White (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0156028778/sr=1-1/qid=1137137157/ref=pd_bbs_1/002-5664739-6960053?%5Fencoding=UTF8) by Michel Faber.
Valentine--I'm sure you can predict the problems that will arise here
Definitely only a middle name. It wouldn't be good as a first name and everyone would call her "Val." Ick (no offense to anyone named Val).
Evangelina--I will always think of evangelists, who I despise, and I'm sure I won't be the only one
This got moved down significatly on my list. It once was #1. So I sort of agree...
Linne was my great-great grandmother's name. I've always loved it.
Orenda--makes me think "horrendous"
Everyone says that :o) So maybe I'll cut it.
Thanks for the input!!

Date: 2006-01-12 11:33 pm (UTC)As for Hero, yeah to me it's like naming him God or something. It sounds arrogant and people might resent him for it, or certainly pick on him for it. A hero is also a sub sandwich, so there's extra teasing material there. It's cute in theory, maybe for a character in a book or something, but I wouldn't saddle a child with it.
