When you see the name Madeleine (spelled that way), how do you pronounce it?
I want to name my future daughter Madeleine. I also really want it to be pronounced like the "in" in "violin," not like "line." The obvious solution to make it pronounced correctly as frequently as possible is to spell it Madelyn, but I hate that spelling. Do you think spelling it Madeleine will make it obvious that we're not going for Madeline?
Edit: I don't think I quite described it properly when I wrote this in the first place. I'm not looking for "lynn" so I guess "violin" wasn't the best word to choose. =D It really is more of a "len" sound I want, though I don't mind "lynn" either. I just don't care for the long "i" of "line."

Date: 2008-04-07 12:24 am (UTC)I don't think there would be too much of a problem with people mixing up the pronunciation, because at least where i am from, the 'line' way of saying it no where near as common.
When I see the name Madeline these days, i just automatically assume it would be prn the 'lyn' way.

Date: 2008-04-08 04:56 pm (UTC)We've got a few but we can't decide which one we like best. =D Last name is Thompson, just to give you an idea of how they'll sound.
-Rose or Grace just because we like them (I think Rose flows better than Grace).
-Elizabeth as it was my grandmother's middle name, or Patricia because it is my other grandmother's name (again, Patricia doesn't flow quite as well but my husband doesn't care for it as a first name and I really want to use it somewhere).
-Husband likes "Jo," which is my middle name and a family name on my side (bit of a long story: my father's sister, whose name was Constance Jo, died tragically when she was in her teens - and so my father and each of his siblings who have a daughter worked Constance or Jo into at least one child's name; I've got an entire generation of cousins with variations on it as first or middle names), but again I really don't think it flows.
We have also taken into consideration the fact that any children we have will be adopted, and we're probably adopting internationally. So, depending on circumstances and the country we adopt from, it is also possible we would use an ethnic name for a middle name - and obviously at this point we can't really plan on those since we don't know what country it'll end up being. =D
