When you see the name Madeleine (spelled that way), how do you pronounce it?

I want to name my future daughter Madeleine. I also really want it to be pronounced like the "in" in "violin," not like "line." The obvious solution to make it pronounced correctly as frequently as possible is to spell it Madelyn, but I hate that spelling. Do you think spelling it Madeleine will make it obvious that we're not going for Madeline?

Edit: I don't think I quite described it properly when I wrote this in the first place. I'm not looking for "lynn" so I guess "violin" wasn't the best word to choose. =D It really is more of a "len" sound I want, though I don't mind "lynn" either. I just don't care for the long "i" of "line."

I don't know why, but when I see Madeleine, I think Mad-eh-lane.

Same. I don't know why either. I know that it's generally Mad-eh-lyn, but the "leine" makes me think "lane."

i think youre more likely to get the lynn pronunciation with the leine ending, but in the u.s. (i am just assuming thats where you are, correct me if i am wrong) you are likely to get the lynn pronunciation with any ending. i have very rarely heard anyone called mad-uh-line here in the united states.

Sorry, I say it MAD-ul-line. If it's Madeline, I'd say it either way. If it's Madelin, I definitely say it MAD-uh-lynn.

Lol sorry, when I see Madeleine...I think of it prn like 'Line'.

I don't think there would be too much of a problem with people mixing up the pronunciation, because at least where i am from, the 'line' way of saying it no where near as common.

When I see the name Madeline these days, i just automatically assume it would be prn the 'lyn' way.

Since that's my name in French class, my teacher pronounces it "Mad-uh-len", but I say "Mad-uh-lin."

That spelling to me is Mad-ah-lane. And Madeline is Mad-ah-line. Madelyn is Mad-ah-lyn.

I'd be more likely to say "line" with that spelling, because I'd feel like the parents went that extra little mile to make sure it was mad-uh-line.

Generally, when I see Madeline I just say Madelyn. I don't know anyone who goes by Mad-uh-line.

MAD-uh-len/the way you want it to be pronounced. Don't mispell it for pronounciation, because Madeleine is pronounced MAD-uh-len.

Yes, but it was a better comparison than the people who talk about Mad-e-lines (like fishing line or leen?) and -lyns (again, lynn or lien) instead of the -lens and -liens.

But the name is thrashed, it truly is. At least go for the more youthful nickname Lena/Lainey instead of Maddie, if you decide on it.

So, other than Maddie, there are:

Della
Lena
Lainey

But I can't think of any others. :/

Which ones do you both like at the moment?

You'd have a fantastically nicknamed Madeleine on your hands, then. c:

Are you contemplating middle names yet?

Depending on where you live, you might want to watch that. New York is not an issue, I'm sure. But I know a Floridian accent often pronounces short i and short e the same.

I pronounce them all differently.

Madeleine is Mad-uh-len
Madelyn is Mad-uh-lin
Madeline is Mad-uh-line.

I'd want to say it with a line ending spelled like that. She'll still get it either way. Mine's spelled with a y and I still get 'line' sometimes. To throw another option out there mine is spelled Madalyn.

I say Madeleine mad-el-EYEN

Madeleine makes me think mad-eh-layn or mad-eh-line. Madeline makes me thing mad-eh-lyn or mad-eh-len. Other spellings make me cringe. I love the name, though.

My first instinct is definitely to pronounce the final syllable as -len when it's spelled Madeleine. Or close to -len, like you're saying. It only becomes -lynn for me if it's spelled Madelyn or something similar. And it only becomes -line if it's spelled Madeline.

Mad eh len or Mad eh lane, or Mad uh ln if saying it fast :D

When I see that spelling, I assume the "lin/len" ending is indicated.

I pronounce it like you want it to be pronounced, i.e. Mah-de-len.
But then again, I'm in Europe =)

That's our fav girl name at the moment! We're pronouncing it Mad-a-lin, even though I know she may get some Lanes or Lines from some people. I don't like the Madelynn spelling, so I'm just gonna have to tell her to say "no, it's pronounced Mad-a-lin." haha

Isn't that the spelling of the children's book character? LOL I love that name!
