Date: 2008-04-03 11:36 am (UTC)Tristan means sad, such an ugly way to welcome a child to the world.
Not that Jesus is all that better, in my book.. :P but still..

Date: 2008-04-03 02:15 pm (UTC)Aside from the meaning of the name itself - look at the other things associated with the name.
First, there's Tristan - from Tristan and Isolde. It's a beautiful love story (albeit tragic) and it's a big part of Irish and English culture. One can't really disagree with Tristan being used because the story is so sad when people openly use Romeo and Juliet, and we all know how that little story turned out. Heh.
Second, there's Tristam - which can be turned into Tristan. Sir Tristam was a Knight of the Round Table, and a gallant and brave man - according to legend.
All in all, I'd say the associations aren't so terrible.

In an english-speaking country of course the connection between Tristan and its meaning might not be so easy to access, but in Italy and France "triste" is the common use word for "sad", so to me for example (I'm in Italy), that's what I instantly associate with.
I think Tristan sounds nice, although maybe to close to Kristin, but I wouldn't choose for a child, as I'm a name-meaning nut :)

Date: 2008-04-03 02:23 pm (UTC)I would assume, however, that any good meanings behind the name (in my case the strong love for the name and how it's steeped in history) would overrule any bad meaning, ultimately, no?
Perhaps not in your case, and of course you're welcome to your own opinions and decisions. :)
I just wanted to point out (because so many people seem to believe it's a horrible name) that there are SOME people out here that don't think Tristan is such a terrible name.
Of course, in the long run, the only opinion that really matters to me - regarding the names of my children, are the opinions of my children.

Date: 2008-04-03 03:55 pm (UTC)I like the name Christian but I am very not Christian so it seems weird to me if I used it.
