I voted for Christian, but I like Tristan too! The only thing that I have against Tristan is that it means "Sad".

Definitely Christian. Tristan sounds too feminine and reminds me of this guy I went to high school who I have always thought was gay, but my friend claims he is not.

Tristan. Christian is my brother's name. Plus, religion and I don't get along very well these days.

Tristan - it's less common than Christian (well, around where I live anyway). But I like them both!

I'm not really a fan of either, but if I had to choose I like Tristan better. I know Christian is a legit name, but it just seems so weird to name your kid Christian and he turns out to be an atheist. Or he might convert to Judaism or Islam. You never know!

Tristan because Christian is REALLY popular around here.

Christian. By FAR!
Tristan means sad, such an ugly way to welcome a child to the world.
Not that Jesus is all that better, in my book.. :P but still..

As my youngest son's name is Tristan, I feel the desire to disagree with you.

Aside from the meaning of the name itself - look at the other things associated with the name.

First, there's Tristan - from Tristan and Isolde. It's a beautiful love story (albeit tragic) and it's a big part of Irish and English culture. One can't really disagree with Tristan being used because the story is so sad when people openly use Romeo and Juliet, and we all know how that little story turned out. Heh.

Second, there's Tristam - which can be turned into Tristan. Sir Tristam was a Knight of the Round Table, and a gallant and brave man - according to legend.

All in all, I'd say the associations aren't so terrible.

sure, there's not only one possible association.
But personally, I'd like to rule out all bad associations when naming my child.

In an english-speaking country of course the connection between Tristan and its meaning might not be so easy to access, but in Italy and France "triste" is the common use word for "sad", so to me for example (I'm in Italy), that's what I instantly associate with.

I think Tristan sounds nice, although maybe to close to Kristin, but I wouldn't choose for a child, as I'm a name-meaning nut :)

As I speak French pretty fluently, I am aware of the translation for Tristan.

I would assume, however, that any good meanings behind the name (in my case the strong love for the name and how it's steeped in history) would overrule any bad meaning, ultimately, no?

Perhaps not in your case, and of course you're welcome to your own opinions and decisions. :)

I just wanted to point out (because so many people seem to believe it's a horrible name) that there are SOME people out here that don't think Tristan is such a terrible name.

Of course, in the long run, the only opinion that really matters to me - regarding the names of my children, are the opinions of my children.

I have to say, neither. Tristan means "sad" and I think it's feminine sounding, and Christian, well... you don't have to BE Christian to use the name, I guess, but I would feel silly using it since I am not Christian...

Ditto on the Christian thing.

I like the name Christian but I am very not Christian so it seems weird to me if I used it.

My hate for the name Christian is enormous. I have no idea why, but I hate it.

I prefer Tristan even though it's getting hugely popular in my area. I used to know one, (who was my favourite kid in my daycare) then went away to Australia for a year. I come back and there's four in a daycare of 100 kids and three people in my extended family used it for their sons.
