What do you think of the name Lowden as a first name for a boy?

It's my last name now, but supposing I ever find a boy who can put up with me, I plan to take my husband's name when I get married. I am the last Lowden in the line, though, but I feel like using it on a potential future son would be a good way to honor the family. So that's why I ask :]

P.S. "Low" rhymes with now, it's not like the opposite of high.

I think it would be a great middle name. Not so good as a first name though.

I think it's okay. I'm pretty sure that you would have to correct just about everyone on the pronunciation, though, because I think most people's first inclinations would be to pronounce it with the vowel from "know", not "now".

Not that that's necessarily a reason to entirely discount a name, but it's something to take into consideration.

I like the sound, but it reminds me of Newhart, but that isn't necessarly a bad thing for me because I used to watch that show all the time on Nick @ Nite about ten years ago.

I don't care for it, and I'd definitely mispronounce it.

I wouldn't use it as a first name, maybe a middle name.

My last name is Gray and 'Gray' names are getting kind of popular right now, I think I would consider at least a middle name, something like Grady or Grayson.

My boy's last name is Gray and I'm finding it difficult to make name combinations out of it. =\

Also, his mother's maiden name is Grady. She wanted to use it as a first name, but Grady Gray just doesn't work.

Lol, I really liked the name Grady for awhile and I amused myself thinking about naming a kid Grady Gray.

Yeah, Gray can be kind of hard to match names with. My name is Megan Leanne, which I don't mind but the double 'G' sound in Megan and Gray has always bothered me. My brother's name is Robert Daniel but Robert is a family name and he goes by Danny. I think Danny Gray sounds fine but Dan Gray isn't great, in my opinion.

But really I think anything with more than one syllable won't be bad.

I like it. I've only seen it spelled Louden, though. I don't if people would want to pronounce Loo-den or not. However, since it's your last name you probably don't want to switch the spelling.

I'm all for using surnames as middle names. In fact, I would consider doing it myself. But I'm not so sure about first names.

I think that a lot of surnames sound really nice as middle names, and using them as middle names can be a good way of honoring family, heritage, etc. without saddling the kid with a first name that's a bit too much. There are some surnames that I think I like as first names, but not many. It's getting to be sort of trendy right now...the whole giving-kids-surnames-as-their-first-name thing. I guess if there's a lot of meaning behind the name, that makes it better in my eyes. But people won't necessarily know the story behind the name when they first hear it or see it.

I can't really see Lowden as a first name. But if you really want to use it as such, don't let my opinion stand in your way. :o)
