So, there are always names that people can find something to make fun of in it... Reading through some comments on some entries, I've seen people bringing up issues about what their future child may be called as a nickname/name making fun of their name, and was hoping to get some feedback on some names here...

Autumn

Owen

Just out of curiosity, if you were a rotten little kid in elementary school, what could you make fun of with these two names?

honestly, if i were a naughty little twat (no pun intended) in elementary school, the worst i could see was somebody calling her "Fall" and even then, it's not like bad. i see nothing bad with those two names and i can't see either of them twisted into horrific nicknames

with a lot of word names, when they learn about that word or when it's said it'll invoke sniggers from some kids and the teacher may even single them out about it.

I can't think of any bad nicknames that school kids would come up with.

However, whenever I hear the name "Autumn," the sounds immediately reminds me of "ottoman," and I snicker uncontrollably.

But that is my problem :)

Oh! And this doesn't really apply either, but I used to know someone named Owen years ago. He called when I was away, and when my Eastern European parents gave me the message when I came home, they said: "Some guy called you. He had a funny name. Oven, or something? What kind of a name is Oven?"

Owen is the boy name we have picked out as well, so naturally we like it. My mom for some reason is the only one who doesn't. I just don't think she's heard it enough. She tends to like more common names (hence why my name is Jennifer haha). She claims that Owen is a last name and not a first name. I don't know, but we're still going with it for when/if we have a son.

And I think Autumn is a beautiful name =) I can't think of a thing I don't like about it and can't forsee it getting made fun of. A co-worker of mine has a beautiful daughter named Autumn.

Autumn is pretty, but only if she was born in the fall. I know of a girl who's name is August, but she was born in September. That's strange to me.

I don't have a problem with Owen, either. It doesn't seem like a kid's name to me, but obviously he'd grow up and it would fit him.

On the contrary, I see Owen as more of a child's name. That's probably because I have a little cousin named Owen who's 6 or 7.

I adore Autumn, it is one of our choices if we ever have a little girl.

Owen-ehh, I'm not too fond of it. It makes me think of a chubby old man.

don't beat me up, but i DID tease a girl named autumn growing up. so here goes.

"is your sister named summer or spring?" (her sister was named May, actaully.)

Au-Dumb.

"indian summer, indian summer."

and, of course, "couldn't your parents think of a real name? what, did they pick it out of a dictionary cuz the couldn't afford a baby name book?"

I was mean, leave me alone.

I'd call her "Fall".

Owen seems like an easy name to chant. Owen-bowen-schmowen. Gah, I dunno. I'd call him Owen Nolan, too, but there aren't that many hockey fans out there, and I'm sure little Owen will be in school long after Mr. Nolan retires.

I think it's a cool name, btw. I like them both.

i went to school with an autumn, and i always loved the name. she never had any negative nicknames, to my knowledge. as for owen, that is the name we're giving our boy, and i can't find a single thing wrong with it!

We wanted Owen, but his initials would be OO. So we decided against it.

I know a kid named Owen, he's 6. His parents call him "Oh-ee". It reminds me of the Wizard of Oz - "Oh Ee Oh..."

I love the name Owen, but I could forsee some Owen/owin' jokes. Autumn, yeah, there'd be a lot of Fall/Winter/Spring/Summer jokes, as well as the normal rhyming problems.

Where ya goin' Owen?

What are ya showin' Owen?

'Oh When' did your parents name you Owen?

How come you're not growin' Owen? (Might be tough if he ends up being short.)

Autumn seems fine, and it's beautiful. Only problem there is as stated above - fall, spring, etc.

Even if the kids' name is something common and something they hear a lot, like "Elizabeth" or "Michael", if a kid WANTS to make fun of something bad enough, they'll find a way.

No name is immune to teasing.

My name has brought me years of teasing through school, but nothing is original anymore. Teasing stopped around college, and marrying a guy with an equally as unusual name has just brought interest from others who want to know if we'll carry on the unusual-name trend. :)

Owen is a great name. I would like to use it for my future boy but my last name is B. and I can't get over "O. B." as initials. :(

There was a little girl named "Autumn Summer" in my 5th grade class, and she drove me INSANE! She had big feet, and always fell over, and one day, I pretended to be all sad when she fell. I patted the ground beside me and said "Autumn Summer, Spring over here so we can see what happened in the fall"

And as for Owen, probably "Hey Starsky, where's Hutch?"
