This was a name of a baby on A Baby Story..

Joy Increasing

Another name of a baby that came into my work with her grandma..

Neve.

I like Neve, but not Joy Increasing.

i love Neve…but spelled Niamh. i had a good friend in college who was an exchange student from Ireland named Niamh. she hated that everyone here mispronounced it.

i don't really think she had any right to be angry about that..

um, okay. the way i see it, she has a "right" to be angry about anything she wishes to be angry about. just like you have the right to get angry about whatever you wish.

however, she wasn't angry, just annoyed. i never said angry, i said she hated it.

I kind of disagree ... if you change the spelling of a name so as to make its pronunciation not immediately apparent, and then you get mad at people who make mistakes, then it's your own fault. When it's a name that has a good reason for being spelled the way it is, I'm okay with that, even if it is an unusual name. It might be annoying to have to correct spelling/pronunciation, but people will get it eventually.

I much prefer that to respelling names like Siobhan and Niamh so that they look the way they sound.

yes. i would still spell it neve then, otherwise 99.9% of the time people will be mispronouncing it. or mispelling it.

To be fair, I think she would have to pronounce it a few times for someone to get it. However, I would totally understand if that person just didn't care and kept pronouncing it wrong.

Joy Increasing sounds like he/she should be the child of a Puritan, the used names like that. I read a book once where part of it was set in England at that time, and there was a character whose first name was O Be Joyful.

But since when is this not the 21st century?

Joy is great. Increasing is just stupid.

Don't have a problem with Neve, although I don't care for it.

It seems really Puritan to me. Ew.

Neve is nice - I'm watching The Craft (lol) right now and was just thinking about how I like the name.

IAWTC

Content strike? May I ask why? Something special about the 21st that we should be doing instead? Or just a random day to leave LJ alone, and go have a life outside of the 'net? Just curious. :)
